Match Report v Gorleston

Gorleston 2 - 1 Long Melford

Thurlow Nunn Premier - Sat 25 November - Att: 93

PICTURED: Despite Nathan Rowe's late goal it was a frustrating afternoon for Melford on the Norfolk coast.

With six players unavailable Melford manager Jamie Bradbury shuffled the pack, with youngster Louis Donovan-Perry making his full debut, while Scott Sloots and Ben Judge returned to the starting eleven. George Day having served his suspension was on the bench. Match report from Chenoberet...

The opening minutes saw Melford make a bright start, forcing a corner and several throws in line with the home penalty box. The best effort came when an in-swinging corner from Ben Judge was scrambled clear by the home defence.

In a break to the other end Peter Lambert fired wide when well positioned.

Gorleston scored the opening goal after 11 minutes when Dan Smith was barged in the back and off the ball, in front of the referee, the Melford defence paused in anticipation of a free kick, and JOEL WATTS the recipient of the loose ball ran through to fire wide of Darren Moyes the Melford keeper.

There was a strong response from Melford with Hassan Ally and Steve Adams both unable to convert from close range.

The home team reacted immediately, with Watts shaving the Melford post with a free kick, and Ross Gilfedder testing out keeper Moyes with a powerful shot.

As the game went on some strange decisions from the official started to frustrate both teams, with a couple of mass protests from both teams being the result.

On the half time whistle again Melford had good chances but Ally and Adams were unable to get their efforts past Taureen Molloy in the home goal.

It was a supercharged Gorleston who opened the second half with only some superb keeping from Moyes keeping the score intact.

Frustration spilled over for Melford after 67 minutes and Josh Collins was red carded for a comment made to the referee.

A morale sapping episode for Melford, and in response the home team went upfield to get a second goal after 73 minutes, after a melee in the Melford goalmouth KYLE INGRAM stooped low to head home from a yard out.

The Villagers came back with a Steve Adams header striking the Gorleston crossbar.

After 90 minutes Melford who continued to fight hard clawed a goal back, a cross from the Melford left flank from Ally found the far corner of the goal and NATHAN ROWE climbed high to head home.

It was now the turn of Gorleston to put in a desperate defending performance but the elusive equaliser never arrived.

A below par performance from Melford, although they were not aided by some contentious decision making by the official in charge.

MELFORD: Darren Moyes, Dan Smith, Louis Donovan-Perry, Ben Judge, Ross Waugh, Josh Collins, Hassan Ally, Scott Sloots, Steve Adams, Nathan Rowe, Callum Hemson (79) Subs: George Day (79), Jamie Bradbury (not used)

  • At Stoneylands the Reserves hosted Hadleigh United. After a goalless first half, Hadleigh took the lead early in the second. Melford were soon back on level terms through Jake Ashley, but a flurry of late goals in the final 25 minutes or so saw Hadleigh run out comfortable 7-1 winners.
