Match Report v Halstead Town

Long Melford 1 - 2 Halstead Town (aet)

FA Vase 1st Qual. - Sat 09 Sep - Att: 88

After two heavy defeats for Melford earlier in the week this was a much more positive performance, but losing to a last minute extra time goal was a bitter pill to swallow. Match report from Chenoberet:

Within the opening minutes Melford had three excellent chances, Will Wingfield shooting narrowly wide, Hassan Ally seeing his effort cleared off the goal line and Michael Schofield planting a free kick wide.

At the other end another Melford defensive mix up saw Cameron Storie have his shot blocked on the Melford goal line.

After 32 minutes Melford went ahead when a WILL WINGFIELD shot from twenty yards hit the post then found the net.

Soon after this Darren Moyes made a fine save from Adam Hampson who was the best player on display for the visitors.

Just before half time Melford again went close Ally played in Schofield and his shot it the post and went out of play.

The start of the second half saw the Halstead goal under constant pressure, a Daniel Swain header looked goal bound but was cleared off the goal line, this was followed by a Callum Hemson shot hitting the crossbar, and finally Wingfield shooting wide from an excellent position.

Then it was the turn of Halstead with Melford taking a more defensive position and finally the pressure paid when after 80 minutes Moyes fouled Hampson in the penalty area and KANE GILBERT converted from the spot.

And so into extra time after chances at both ends, and in the last of the thirty minutes Halstead stole the game from Melford when a overhead kick from NICK WILDERSPIN found the top corner of the net.

MELFORD: Darren Moyes, Callum Hemson, Ben Judge, Jake Jackson, Steve Adams, Anthony Waugh, Hassan Ally, Ross Waugh, Will Wingfield, Michael Schofield (72), Daniel Swain (89)

Subs: Billy Bush (89), Scott Sloots (72)

Subs not used: Josh Collins, Jamie Bradbury

  • Good luck to Halstead Town in the next round where they will be at home to Stanway Rovers.
