Match Report v Ipswich Wanderers

Long Melford 2 - 1 Ipswich Wanderers

Thurlow Nunn Premier Division - Saturday 23 September 2017

Pictured: Dan Swain produced a man of the match performance with a goal and assist as Melford picked up a vital 3 points.

Up against a Ipswich Wanderers side buoyed by their midweek victory against Gorleston, this was an excellent performance by Melford who had enough chances to win by a much bigger margin.

In the opening exchanges it was wave after wave of Melford attacks, several good opportunities came and went but finally the pressure told around the half hour mark when DAN SWAIN picked the ball up 20 yards out and hit a sweet strike into the bottom left corner, giving Ipswich keeper Jack Spurling no chance.

The Melford supporters had waited nearly 500 minutes for a home league goal this season but like London buses two arrived in quick succession - five minutes later this time Swain turned provider crossing for HASSAN ALLY to head home and double Melford's lead.

The entire half was dominated by Melford with the visitors' defence at sixes and sevens trying to cope with the pace and skill of Hassan Ally, while Callum Hemson in an advanced role on the other wing was also a threat.

In the second half Melford always looked comfortable with Dan Swain and Elliot Walker controlling the game in central midfield.

James Watling headed over the bar for the visitors but it was Melford who had the majority of the chances with Hassan Ally hitting the post with a powerful shot, while Will Wingfield and Steve Adams also came close to scoring the third goal.

In the last minute of stoppage time, with their first effort on target Wanderers pulled a goal back when KRIS ROSE got on the end of a free kick to head past Darren Moyes.

It's been a tough month for Melford who've had to take some criticism recently - today they will rightly take the praise for a well deserved win. AC
