Match Report v Walsham (a)

Walsham-le-Willows 0 - 1 Long Melford

Thurlow Nunn Premier Division - Saturday 13 January 2018

PICTURED: Will Wingfield scored the winner today against a Walsham side who won 4-1 at Saffron Walden in their previous match.

There were four changes to the Melford starting line-up from last week with Darren Moyes, Ashley Sloots, Will Wingfield and Nathan Rowe replacing Josh Shepherd, Josh Collins, Jake Jackson and Hassan Ally. Match report from Chenoberet...

The Villagers completed a league double over a Walsham team just above them in the table before kick-off.

First half domination should have seen Melford in a secure position at half time, that did not happen and a revived Walsham came very close to sharing the points during the second period.

Straight from the kick off Melford spurned a good chance, Callum Hemson made space down the right flank and his low cross saw a sliding Nathan Rowe push the ball wide of the post.

Twice David Lopez came close with two fierce shots, with Melford unable to make the impact they deserved.

The goal came after 12 minutes, a long throw from Lopez found the Walsham box, Andy Fisher prodded the ball to WILL WINGFIELD, who converted from close range.

Little was seen of the home team attack and of the three times they threatened the best effort was a free kick from Craig Nurse that went close to the Melford upright.

After 41 minutes a real chance for Walsham came when Reece Clarke got to the edge of the Melford penalty area but Darren Moyes the Melford keeper made a sharp save from his well struck shot.

Just on the half time whistle it looked as though Melford had consolidated their lead, a long ball from the back put Andy Fisher on a charge to beat the advancing keeper Tom Coombs, the resultant lob from Fisher went over the keeper and hit the post and nestled into the turf, being cleared by the home defence at the expense of a corner.

It was a much better second half for Walsham and they threw bodies forward to retrieve the game, Nurse went wide with a free kick, Ryan Twinn flashed an effort wide and Cameron Nicholls headed wide.

At the other end Melford came close with a thunderous free kick from Lopez which was inches wide.

Despite increased pressure in added time Melford held firm and overall deservedly took all three points.

MELFORD: Darren Moyes, Dan Smith, Ashley Sloots, Ben Judge, Ross Waugh, Anthony Waugh, Will Wingfield, David Lopez, Andy Fisher, Nathan Rowe, Callum Hemson

Subs: Lewis Haughton (62), Elliot Walker (68), Dan Swain (68)

Subs not used: Josh Collins, Jamie Bradbury

Melford MOM: David Lopez, for his astute vision and shooting prowess.
