Match Report v Wivenhoe Town (h)

LONG MELFORD 3 - 1 WIVENHOE TOWN

Thurlow Nunn Premier Division - Friday 09 March - Att: 56

PICTURED: Groundsman Ivan Whitehart was Melford's"man of the match" tonight. Despite the bad weather, thanks to Ivan's skills the game could go ahead.

The club has gone two seasons without having a First Team home match postponed, a record that even the top professional clubs would be proud of. Match report from Chenoberet...

With steady rain falling throughout the game, both teams tried to play football in very trying conditions.

After only three minutes Melford went ahead with an excellent move, Ashley Sloots ran some thirty yards down the Melford left flank and his low hard cross found ex Dragon LEWIS HAUGHTON who clipped the ball home from six yards, a goal of great quality.

The Villagers tried to add to the tally with Hassan Ally and David Lopez being foiled by Lewis Down the Wivenhoe keeper. Again Ally got through on goal but shot straight at keeper Down.

On 18 minutes Melford scored their second, a low 30 yard free kick from SCOTT SLOOTS squirmed through the clutches of keeper Down and into the net.

To give credit to Wivenhoe they continued to battle, with Jack Charnock proving to be a handful for the Melford defence.

On 28 minutes their efforts were rewarded when GARRY BURDETT got on the end of a free-kick to head home.

Still Melford threatened with Anthony Waugh heading a David Lopez free kick high and wide of the visitors goal.

Just after half time a Dan Smith blockbuster was pushed over the bar by Down, an Elliot Walker header hit the bar, followed by a Scott Sloots volley which was narrowly wide.

On 69 minutes Melford made sure of the game when a pin point pass from Elliot Walker found LEWIS HAUGHTON on the edge of the box and he fired home.

Twice Wivenhoe had good chances to get back in the match, but both times Kyle Binns fired wide.

In the dying minutes both Will Wingfield and Hassan Ally had chances for Melford but shot straight at Down the visiting keeper.
