Once it was said that during a frenetic period of a football commentary Garth Crooks  commented "Football is football; if that were not the case,it would not be the game it is” . Although noted in the annals of historic gaffes it did have some ring of truth in the cause of the 73 mile each way trip to Gorleston on Saturday. This game originally played on August 8th when Melford lost three goals to one, was ordered to be replayed  by the League as Gorleston fielded an ineligible player. Bizarre as it might sound the “punishment” for the Norfolk team was that the Villagers should be invited to play the game again. Sorry I know the “rules may be rules” but in this fair and just world, this does seem to be a strange way of settling a problem in a just and fair manner. Or is it this writer  with a strange interpretation of what is fair and just?

Anyway another bizarre outcome was with a stronger team on paper according to locals against a weaker “Greens” team we lost by a one goal larger deficit. Although we were missing  four regulars (work rotas) we did not perform to our recent level and were outgunned in every department on the day.   We however scored the best goal of the game a cracking move involving Adam King  helped by Adam Flack, then a great ball from Sam Banya and there was that great athlete Ashley Skeggs rising majestically to head with force into the net,  that alone was worth the 146 mile round trip!

It is very difficult for this writer  born into the world of inside forwards and wing half backs, to level proffer some offerings that connect with the modern management theories of “diamond formations, five man midfields and lone strikers”, but in the laymen language of old, as a team the marking was poor  (zone or man to man?), we failed to win very many tackles(remember body weight behind the tackle) and the quality of passing was not good.  Observations not castigation, as of late we have looked a much better team, and I understand we played very well against Diss.  The result of all this is that we have now dropped two places in the League to second from bottom,so let us all get down to Stoneylands this Saturday and see if we can turn over high flying Brantham.

Speaking of which great result for the Reserves on Saturday overturning Brantham by three goals to nil,  scorers Liam Cawtheray 2 and Tommy Perry  the other.  Both Liam and Dan Statham featured as they were unable to get to Gorleston due to work rostas.  Great win last week at Ipswich  5 goals to 0 against Ipswich Wanderers, scorers Ben Simpson 2 Tom Perry 1 Dechlan Costello 1 and wait for it!  Keeper Paul Wood 1, him and Liam Daniels shared the keepers role, playing a half each out on the field.  Well done Paul always thought you might emulate Peter Crouch, same build and we know as a youngster you played in the same team.

So what do we need?  we need a good supportive crowd next Saturday at Stoneylands  for the game against Brantham, lets turn them over and start heading for a half way point in the League, we like the FA Cup Competition! We do!    CHENOBERET
