FA Cup Match Report

LONG MELFORD  1  CHESHUNT  3

(FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round, Tue 22 Sep)

The FA Cup dream ended for The Villagers when they succumbed to opposition two Leagues higher in an interesting and lively cup tie at Stoneylands.

There was no disgrace losing by two goals to a Cheshunt team full of ex professional footballers, who are strong and commanding in attack and defence.

Buoyed on by a good sized crowd, Melford fought hard and should be proud of their efforts over the three FA Cup ties this season.

The visitors made their intentions clear after 8 minutes when the Melford team failed to clear their defensive lines, and the much travelled and experienced striker ADAM CUNNINGTON rifled home on the angle from the Cheshunt left flank.

Although Melford tried to get some attacking momentum going, they were often thwarted by the excellent defensive attributes of Adam Crowther and Taylor Miles who controlled the midfield area for Cheshunt.

The home team had another escape on 33 minutes when a header from Cunnington hit the Melford bar and went out of play.

Hard work put Melford into a purple patch just before half time and on reflection they will wish they had made better of it.

Twice the tricky Ben Tait got behind the Cheshunt defence, and from one of his crosses Ben Judge with a header was inches wide.

It was not a good start to the second half for Melford, the talented and speedy Nana Adarkwe got down the Melford left flank and his cross found the predatory former Cambridge Utd and Billericay striker ADAM CUNNINGTON to finish at the far post.

Credit to Melford they continued to fight hard and they were rewarded on 60 minutes with a goal.

Full back Will Wingfield ran down the Melford left flank, his quality cross found the head of Jamie Griffiths at the far post and his nod down was forced home by JACOB BROWN.

The hope evaporated for Melford on 75 minutes when during a melee in the penalty box ZACK NEWTON forced the ball into the net.

In the dying minutes of the game Melford should have done better when a low hard free kick from Kieran Michaels ran along the goalmouth but no Melford player could apply the finishing touch.

Overall a fair score line with Melford playing well against a better team. CHENOBERET
