FA Cup Replay Match Report

LONG MELFORD 1 - 2 HAVERHILL ROVERS

THE EMIRATES FA CUP 1Q REPLAY - WED 12 SEP - ATT: TBC

Melford's best FA Cup run in 14 years came to an end at Stoneylands. It was a close cup tie with only one goal separating the two sides over 180 minutes of football - but overall Haverhill deserved their win and we wish them luck in the next round against Leatherhead.

Melford were second best for long periods but it could have been a different story if The Villagers had converted their chances in the opening ten minutes.

Firstly a cross into the Haverhill box saw Pablo Chaves volley over the bar from. This was followed by an even better chance when Ben Judge found a gap in the Haverhill defence and ran through on goal with Haverhill custodian James Philp coming off his line, the Melford youngster attempted a lob which was blocked by Philp, and looked like a certain goal turned out to be a good save.

Soon after this Hassan Ally shot wide after a trademark dart down the right and at this early stage it was Melford well on top.

However, gradually Haverhill, who overall were quicker and sharper than the home team, started to boss the game.

The pressure upped on the Melford defence with Haverhill finding movement and space down the flanks.

It was not a surprise when after 16 minutes Haverhill went ahead, a shot from Mark Lovell saw a fine save from Melford keeper Glen Morrison, with BEN BRADLEY latching onto the rebound quicker than the Melford defence to convert into the bottom right corner.

This increased the intensity of the Haverhill play, and Morrison again excelled when he pushed a header from Jake Noble over the bar.

The Villagers reacted and a David Lopez free kick, found defender Anthony Waugh who headed towards goal but keeper Philp collected the ball off the goal line.

For the second period Melford brought on striker Will Wingfield for Lopez and altered their formation in an attempt to get some more cohesion into their play. And over the second period the game became more balanced between the two teams.

For Melford their downfall was the final ball and the fact that no one was in the box to get on the end of dangerous crosses from Hassan Ally in particular.

From the Haverhill perspective they seemed to be in a more defensive mode relying on some effective on the break forward forays.

On 86 minutes the killer goal arrived, some indecision in the Melford defence allowed space for PRINCE MUTSWUNGUMA to fire home on the angle from the Haverhill left flank.

This further setback seemed to bring Melford to life and they started to throw players forward and eventually got a goal back on 90 minutes when WILL WINGFIELD ran through the Haverhill defence and fired home, via the hand of diving keeper Philp.

This goal arrived too late for The Villagers and Haverhill contained the score line to run out worthy winners, to play Leatherhead at home.
