FA Cup Report

Hackney Wick

Long Melford 1

THE EMIRATES FA CUP EXTRA PRELIM.

05 August 2017    Att: 267

PICTURED:  Josh Hodgson in his first start for the club scored the winner to send Melford through to the next round of the FA Cup.

In the Preliminary Round on Saturday 19 August, Melford are at home to Waltham Forest or FC Romania.

This was a hard fought win for Melford at the Old Spotted Dog in East London, against an in-form Hackney Wick side who were unbeaten in pre-season and have picked up four points from their opening two Essex Senior League matches.

Melford had the better of the chances in the first half, while Hackney had threatening moments without testing Melford keeper Darren Moyes.

The second half was to be the opposite with Melford clinging to their lead with some excellent defending by twin central defenders Steve Adams and Anthony Waugh, aided by some superb keeping from Moyes who again was man of the match.

In the opening fifteen minutes Melford forced a succession of corners with both Scott Sloots and Josh Hodgson coming close with shots from the edge of the box.

At the other end Hackney tried the early ball approach with both Tobi Adesina and Jeffrey Idemudia always a threat to Melford with their sheer pace.

After 14 minutes Melford took the lead a free kick from the half way line found the Hackney box, Scott Sloots flicked the ball into the path of JOSH HODGSON, who on his full debut, lobbed the advancing home keeper Martin Arnuachkov and the ball gently found the net.

Two good chances then fell to Melford, Sloots shooting straight at the keeper from eight yards and a powerful Hodgson header from a Sloots' cross, that keeper Arnuachkov tipped over the bar.

At the other end after 32 minutes the home team forced their first corner which keeper Moyes comfortably collected.

Before half time Melford again had chances with two Steve Adams headers failing to find the target.

If the first half had been comfortable for Melford then the second half proved to be an ordeal, with the home team buoyed by the vociferous large crowd throwing everything at Melford, with Darren Moyes proving himself to be a top class keeper.

Straight from the kick off Melford lost the ball to Junior Decker who fired in a fierce shot which keeper Moyes pushed over the cross bar.

This seemed to boost the game for Hackney with Melford starting to find themselves under increasing pressure, and with the introduction of the livewire substitute Saico Djop, the Melford troubles increased, his skills on the ball and neat footwork proved to be very trying for the Melford defenders.

Within minutes he almost put the home team level, except that man Moyes in the Melford goal was at his best to thwart both efforts.

The home team went up a further gear with Melford now under almost constant pressure.

But as is often the case when one team is piling on the pressure, their opponents nearly doubled their lead on the break. Just before the end Melford striker Hodgson was put through on goal, slid the ball round the advancing keeper Arnuachkov, but the ball agonisingly crept the wrong side of the post.  CHENOBERET
