Godmanchester Report

Godmanchester Rovers 5 - 0 Long Melford

Thurlow Nunn Premier - 02 Sep 2017 - Att: 104

After a good result and performance on Tuesday, this can only be described as a bad day at the office.

The usually reliable Melford defence had an afternoon to forget, with four of the five goals coming from individual mistakes at the back.

An early warning came after four minutes when the Melford defence lost possession, Godmanchester got the ball into the net only for the offside flag to rule the effort out.

Just a few minutes later and Melford went behind, again Melford were caught in possession and ZAC KNIGHT-PERCIVAL fired into the net.

This spurred Melford to greater things with Will Wingfield testing out home keeper Phil Peachey from thirty yards, and Nathan Rowe failing to find the target when well placed.

Just before the end of the half and another bit of kamikaze defending, a mix-up at the back conceding the ball to BEN YEOMANS on the edge of the area and the Godmanchester front man fired into the unguarded net.

The third goal came just after the restart when a Godmanchester corner saw some static Melford defending and BEN YEOMANS fired home on the bounce.

Josh Hodgson came closest to pulling a goal back for Melford when his powerful shot forced home keeper Peachey into a good save.

It went from bad to worse for Melford when after 63 minutes they yet again lost possession, with Godmanchester playing in AARAN MACKAY who had a tap-in home from close range.

The final goal summed up Melford's afternoon, a back pass to Moyes was intercepted and again AARON MACKAY stroked the ball home from close range.

The final whistle came as a relief to Melford who were well beaten on the day - hopefully the Villagers can pick themselves up and get back to their best on Wednesday when Saffron Walden Town are the visitors to Stoneylands (7.45pm ko).

MELFORD: Darren Moyes, Sam Bayliss (65), Callum Hemson (65), Jake Jackson (73), Ross Waugh, Anthony Waugh, Hassan Ally, Michael Schofield, Nathan Rowe, Josh Hodgson, Will Wingfield

Subs: Ben Judge (73), Josh Collins (65), Luke Payne (65)

  • At Stoneylands the Reserves lost 2-0 to Witham Town Res - more details to follow soon.
