League Cup Final Preview

THURLOW NUNN LEAGUE CHALLENGE CUP FINAL

LONG MELFORD v FAKENHAM TOWN

Venue: Diss Town FC  Date: Bank Holiday Monday 6th May  Kick Off: 3pm

Weather Forecast: Dry, 10°, a gentle breeze

League Form: Long Melford (D L L W W W)  Fakenham Town (W D W W L W)

When 46 clubs entered the Thurlow Nunn League Challenge Cup at the start of the season, you'd have got very long odds on Long Melford and Fakenham Town being the finalists in May.

But the two sides are there on merit having knocked out tough opponents on the way. Here's a look back on Melford's route to the Final:

1st Rd: Bye

2nd Rd: Woodbridge Town 0 Long Melford 3

High-flying Woodbridge were without the influential Carlos Edwards but still named a strong side, so this was an excellent win for Melford. Ross Waugh gave the Villagers an early lead, a superb individual goal by Hassan Ally doubled the lead and another good finish by Pablo Chaves completed the scoring late on.

3rd Rd: Long Melford 2 Hadleigh United 0

In the next round neighbours Hadleigh came to Stoneylands. Melford had a comfortable 2-0 half time lead thanks to goals scored by Sam Bayliss and David Lopez (pen) and that was how it finished.

Quarter Final: Long Melford 3 Stowmarket Town 1

In terms of league form Stow were heavy favourites to win this one but Melford put in another impressive display and were convincing winners. on the night. Emmanuel Machaya gave Melford an early lead, Nathan Rowe scored from the spot to double the advantage and Pablo Chaves made it 3-0 to kill the match off before Stow scored a late consolation.

Semi Final: Long Melford 4 Benfleet 3

Up until this point Melford had won each round with comfortable scorelines, however this was a much closer game. Benfleet took the lead twice and Melford had to dig deep to come back and win in the 90th minute through Will Wingfield. The other Melford scorers were Emmanuel Machaya, Ross Waugh and Pablo Chaves.

League Cup Scorers 2018/19: Pablo Chaves 3, Emmanuel Machaya 2, Ross Waugh 2, Nathan Rowe 1, Sam Bayliss 1, David Lopez 1, Hassan Ally 1, Will Wingfield 1

For the Melford players, management and supporters at the end of a tough season it's nice to be able to look forward to the Final without the burden of a relegation battle.

Melford go into Monday's match in good form having won their last three league matches to stay in the Premier Division, while Fakenham will also be full of confidence after a successful season finishing 6th in the First Division North.

So this promises to be an entertaining contest between two sides who have done very well to get this far and will want to make the most of the opportunity to win a trophy.

From Melford's point of view it's a first cup final since 2012 (Suffolk Senior Cup), these days don't come around very often so it's one to enjoy and hopefully the players can show what they are capable of.

  • Admission prices at Diss Town are £6 or £3 concessions, a programme will be on sale for £1. A few seats are available on the coach (see elsewhere on website for details) but if you're making your own way to the match Diss Town's ground is on Brewers Green Lane, Diss, IP22 4QP.
