It was an early exit for The Villagers at Arlesey Town FC the temporary home of Baldock Town, after a promising first period.

There was an early blow for Melford before a ball was kicked, when man of the match from the FA Cup tie last week Ben Judge twisted his knee in the warm-up and took no part in the game.

After soaking up early Baldock pressure, Melford started to control the game with Anthony Waugh heading over the Baldock bar and Dan Swain inches wide with a fine free kick.

After so much of the play Melford went ahead after 33 minutes, a long free kick from keeper Glen Morrison found the head of Steve Adams and the ball went to the far post where PABLO CHAVES fired past the keeper.

Soon after this a loose ball came to Hassan Ally who swivelled and shot inches wide of the goal post.

After what was a comfortable first half Melford were below par in the second period, and the home team started to show more ability and composure.

On 63 minutes Melford had a great chance in front of goal, Will Wingfield connected well with the ball but straight at Adam Harpur the home keeper.

On 65 minutes Baldock found the equaliser, with Melford failing to clear the ball from their area, the loose ball came to the home starlet KEIRON BARNES and the youngster placed the ball from an angle into the Melford net.

This was a visible spur to the home team and they started to play some decent football and with a slight touch of the bizarre the winner came after 68 minutes.

A long ball from the Baldock defence found Barnes down the touchline and in space wide down the Baldock left flank, sensing the ball had gone out of play the whole Melford defence and keeper stopped in anticipation of the referees whistle, but Barnes whipped the ball into the box, and there was home striker HARRISON HOLLAND, unmarked, in what appeared to be an offside position to head into the open net.

Despite the Melford protests the goal was ruled as legitimate by the referee and proved to be the winner.

Although the home team had upped their game, Melford tried desperately to get the leveller and twice came close. Nathan Rowe was inches wide with a free kick, and the Will Wingfield put in a blockbuster of a shot which keeper Harpur magnificently turned over the bar.

In the dying minutes Rowe had his header from a corner cleared off the line. But it was not be for The Villagers. CHENOBERET
