Match Report v Brantham Athletic (a) 2018/19

BRANTHAM ATHLETIC 2 LONG MELFORD 4

THURLOW NUNN PREMIER - FRI 08 MARCH - Att: 65

PICTURED: Melford's top scorer Pablo Chaves netted a brace tonight to take his total for the season to 12 goals. Photo by Pengelly Photography.

On Twitter after the match Pablo dedicated the win and two goals to his father back home in Spain who unfortunately has had health issues recently (esperamos que tu padre se mejore pronto).

Melford had agreed to Brantham's request to bring this fixture forward  to Friday night, which meant Steve Adams and Ross Waugh were unavailable.

However it was a strong 16-man squad that travelled to 8th-placed Brantham, with Nathan Rowe and Scott Sloots back from suspension and the vastly experienced Ashley Skeggs also returning to the side.

Not included in the squad was Reece Dobson who signed Thurlow Nunn League forms for Melford earlier this week, but has since decided to take up an offer from a higher league club.

On a sodden pitch with steady rain falling 20 minutes into the game Melford went in front. A great run by Hassan Ally saw him pull the ball across the area and PABLO CHAVES did the necessary from close range.

In the second period Brantham were forced into a change but Melford stuck with the same and went two ahead.

EMMANUEL MACHAYA found space twenty five yards out and his deflected shot carried over the keeper's head and nestled in the net.

Brantham then pulled one back when LAMELL HOWELL found himself free inside the box and was able to score thanks to a deflection.

Worse was to follow for Melford when GEORGE CLARKE broke through evading two challenges to level things up.

A bit of good fortune then came Melford's way, when Brantham keeper Luke Avenell and defender Jack Madley got in a muddle and PABLO CHAVES slid the ball home.

Even better was to follow when NATHAN ROWE was on hand to tuck away from a Skeggs knockdown inside the box and restore Melford’s two-goal advantage.

It rounded off a tremendous all round performance by Melford to prove what a good side they are when everyone steps up to the plate and they take their chances.

MELFORD: Michael Bett, Kieran Michaels, Will Wingfield, David Lopez Ashley Skeggs, Anthony Waugh, Hassan Ally, Jacob Brown, Emmanuel Machaya, Nathan Rowe, Pablo Chaves

Subs used: Deklyn Roy, Scott Sloots, Josh Collins

Subs not used: Dan Smith, Andy Fisher
