Match Report v Coggeshall United

COGGESHALL UNITED 1 - 0 LONG MELFORD

FA VASE 2Q ROUND - SUNDAY 15 SEPTEMBER

A disappointing Vase exit for Melford who had plenty of possession and creative play up to the penalty area, but a lack of cutting edge was the Villagers' downfall.

Top scorer Jamie Griffiths was unavailable due to FA rules stating loan players cannot play in the Vase.

However the squad was boosted by the return of Ben Judge, Nathan Rowe, Steve Adams and Callum Hemson who all missed last week's league win against Swaffham Town. Match report from Chenoberet:

This game at times saw almost total domination by Melford, but goal mouth ability was lacking and goals are the main currency in any game.

After nine minutes Christmas arrived early for Coggeshall, a slip by a Melford defender gifted the ball to Ben Madden, his shot from five yards was parried by keeper Ben Devlin, and picked up by MWETSI MATANGI who side footed home from six yards.

At the other end Nathan Rowe was off target with two efforts, as was Will Wingfield with a shot on the turn.

Then Melford almost gave up another gift on 28 minutes a clearance went straight to Matangi 18 yards out and his shot was saved by the Melford keeper Devlin, followed by Ricky Loveridge firing the rebound wide from four yards out.

Other than three Coggeshall breaks into the Melford half, the whole second period saw the main concentration of play figure around the home goal.

Time and time again Melford failed to capitalise with crosses and edge of the box passes, again foiled by over-complication and lack of shooting appetite.

As the game ended, any firepower seemed to have deserted Melford, and a match that was there to be won ended in a surprising defeat.

LONG MELFORD: Ben Devlin, Jake  Jackson (45), Ashley Sloots (82), Ben Judge (61), Ross Waugh, Anthony Waugh, Nathan Rowe, Jacob Brown, Will Wingfield, Dan Swain, Hassan Ally

Subs: Steve Adams (61), Kyle  Hurley (82), Callum Hemson (45)
