Match Report v Colney Heath

LONG MELFORD 0 - 2 COLNEY HEATH

FA CUP PRELIMINARY ROUND - SAT 24 AUGUST 2019

After Wednesday's punishing defeat Melford put in an improved performance in the FA Cup today, but will be disappointed to concede two avoidable goals.

There wasn't a huge difference between the two teams overall but Colney Heath had more of a threat in the final third and on that basis deserved to extend their winning run to 6 matches. Match report from Chenoberet...

Early in the game the lively Jack Woods headed over for Colney and Ross Waugh cleared off the Melford line from Jon Clements the old fashioned style number nine for Colney.

Melford spurned a good chance when a Jamie Griffiths corner ran over the box without a touch and went for a throw on the far side of the ground.

Another decent chance soon after this for Melford when Griffiths went on a run and crossed from the left but Jake Jackson shot narrowly wide.

Again Clements got through on the Melford goal but shot tamely at Ben Devlin in the Melford goal.

Over complication caught out Melford on 37 minutes when keeper Devlin's pass was intercepted by a Colney player just outside the box and in the resultant goal mouth scramble SPENCER CLARKE-MARDEL from three yards found the net via the underside of the bar.

For the second period the visitors enjoyed more of the ball, with Melford not really threatening as Griffiths up front became isolated.

Frequently Melford were caught by a long balls into the channels, with both Clements and Clarke-Mardel prominent and as a result there were several scrambles in the Melford box.

The killer goal came after 69 minutes with Melford looking for an offside flag SPENCER CLARKE-MARDELL ran through to beat the onrushing Devlin and eventually netting from the Colney left flank.

Soon after this, an excellent save by Devlin denied Colney a third goal.

A better performance from Melford with Will Wingfield man of the match for the home side. But it is back to the drawing board in respect of the defensive errors coupled with the lack of any real impact in the other penalty box.

MELFORD: Devlin, Smith (Denson) Wingfield, Judge, Jackson (70), A Waugh, R Waugh, Ally, Brown, Griffiths, Rowe

Subs used: Hurley (70), Denson (84) not used: Adams, Bradbury, Chisholm
