Match Report v Ely City (a) 2018/19

ELY CITY 4 - 0 LONG MELFORD

THURLOW NUNN PREMIER - SAT 24 NOVEMBER - ATT: 59

What a difference a week makes. After an excellent performance against high-flyers Stowmarket last Saturday, and gaining a point in the process, Melford slumped to their poorest display of the season against an out of form Ely City team, who Melford defeated 3-1 at Stoneylands in August.

After 22 minutes Ely went ahead when Melford central defender Steve Adams was robbed of the ball just outside the Melford area by the much travelled STEVE HOLDER, who ran through on goal to fire past keeper Glen Morrison.

Throughout the game Melford were ponderous in their approach work, conceding the ball by over-complication, and were largely anonymous as an attacking force. The few times they did get forward Sam Bayliss on his 22nd birthday, could not convert twice from the angle and Adams volleyed wide from a corner.

Straight from the half time kick off Ely went further ahead a ball from the right flank saw ALEX BROWN running well, off the ball to side foot home.

Melford tried to get going but could not find any cohesion or rhythm, and continually lost the ball during build up play.

The home team continued to look dangerous with their quick movement and long balls from defence which continued to trouble the Melford defence.

On 58 minutes SAM REED got through the Melford defence and fired home from 12 yards.

On 82 minutes with Melford down to 10 men with Sam Bayliss off injured, the final goal came for Ely when ALEX BROWN cut in from the left flank to score his second goal of the game.

Very few positives for Melford from the game other than their two 16 year olds, Archie Pether and Kieran Michaels introduced as substitutes who looked very promising. CHENOBERET

LONG MELFORD: Glen Morrison, Callum Hemson (70), Josh Collins, Jake Jackson (70), Ross Waugh, Steve Adams, Hassan Ally, David Lopez, Will Wingfield, Pablo Chaves (70), Sam Bayliss

Subs used: Archie Pether (70), Keiran Michaels (70), Andy Fisher (70) not used: Steve Chisholm, Jamie Bradbury
