Match Report v Ely City (a)

PICTURED: Callum Hemson scored the equaliser for Melford today - his 4th goal of the season.

After losing 5-1 at home to Ely City last month, this was a much closer contest and in the end a good away point for Melford.

Match report from Chenoberet...

After a forgettable first half, goals at both ends early in the second period fired the match into life.

During the opening 15 minutes of the game David Lopez fired a Melford free kick wide and at the other end Ely star man, number seven, Deaken Napier fired straight at Jamie Scammell in the Melford goal.

It was a frustrating opening period for those spectating with both teams failing to find any real fluency, and the game being punctuated by some niggly fouls.

Midway through the half Melford had good fortune on their side when a shot from Ashley Walter hit the post and the rebound went straight back into the hands of Scammell the Melford custodian.

As hard as they tried neither team could seem to find the telling pass when near to their opponents penalty areas and for many the half time whistle came as a welcome relief.

The start to the second half was a complete opposite to the forgettable first half, straight from the kick off Ely found their star man Napier down their right flank, and his excellent cross into the box was missed by the Melford defence, and from fifteen yards ex Melford player JAMIE THURLEBOURNE picked his spot with a low hard shot into the net.

On 48 minutes Melford were level when their own star man with the number seven on his back Hassan Ally sprinted down the Melford left flank and his excellent cross found Melford youngster CALLUM HEMSON who fired home from close range.

This at last signalled a real contest and the rest of the half was a closely fought affair, with Ely edging over Melford with more chances.

After 53 minutes a Lopez free kick was parried by Ely keeper Ben Mayhew, the ball found Elliot Walker but he blazed his effort over the crossbar.

At the other end Napier again got though the Melford defence and his fierce diagonal drive was pushed against the bar and out of play by Scammell in the Melford goal.

And so chances came and went at both ends with both teams unable to find the finishing touch.

And for Melford they will have been pleased to get a point after Ely thrashed them 5-1 last month.
