LONG MELFORD 3 - 1 ELY CITY

On the back of the FA Cup win at Redbridge, Melford completed an excellent week by recording their first league win of the season. Match report from Chenoberet:

The Villagers continued their winning ways with a deserved victory over an Ely team who had recorded wins in their opening two games.

In the opening minute Hassan Ally outran the visiting defence his cross was chested down by Steve Adams to Scott Sloots who got away a strong shot but Evan Jeckells in the Ely goal got down to make a diving save.

The Fenland team responded with a 35 yard free kick from ex Melford player Jamie Thurlbourne, which was eventually cleared by Ross Waugh one of the Melford central defenders.

After 14 minutes Ely had a good chance to go ahead, some indecisive play in the Melford defence allowed in Matthew Simpson who got behind Melford keeper Glen Morrison, but his shot towards the unprotected Melford net cleared the cross bar.

Twice the pace of Ally took him past the Ely defence but his crosses into the box could not find a Melford player to convert.

Play switched to the Melford goal and Tom Thulbourn had a good chance at the Melford far post but put his header into the side netting.

Both teams opened the second half on attack with Sam Bayliss finding space for Melford down the Ely left flank but his final shot was cleared by Tom Williams at the heart of the visiting defence.

At the other end another excellent save by keeper Morrison from Simpson kept Melford in the mix.

On 52 minutes Ely went ahead, a fine free kick from Jamie Alsop was pushed out by Morrison, but ASHLEY WALTER fired home the rebound.

Seven minutes later and Melford were level, Ally forced his way into the Ely box, and was brought down by a defender. NATHAN ROWE converted the spot kick.

The lead came for Melford after 67 minutes a cross found the Ely box, Steve Adams headed the ball across the box and NATHAN ROWE put his header into the net via the shoulder of a defender.

The response from Ely was immediate and again keeper Morrison excelled, when he turned over the bar a goal bound effort from Jamie Thurlbourne.

With the Melford defence steady, the third goal arrived after 85 minutes, a long kick from keeper Morrison was flicked on by Adams into the path of PABLO CHAVES who ran through the Ely defence and into the box where his shot found the net under the body of keeper Jeckells, a good goal to seal the victory for Melford.
