Match Report v Felixstowe (h)

Long Melford 1 - 3 Felixstowe & Walton United

Thurlow Nunn Premier - Saturday 06 January 2018 - Att: 108

PICTURED: Assistant manager Josh Shepherd stepped in to deputise for regular keeper Darren Moyes today.

Josh is a former Aston Villa Academy keeper, but he hasn't played for a long time - credit to Josh who had an impressive debut and couldn't be faulted for any of the three goals.

For the second time in less than a month, Melford had the unenviable task of taking on the league leaders with a depleted squad - no fewer than 8 regulars were missing today.

For the record, the players unable to start today due to injury/unavailability were keeper Darren Moyes, captain and top scorer Steve Adams, second top scorer Will Wingfield, third top scorers Scott Sloots and Nathan Rowe, Ashley Sloots, Elliot Walker and Dan Swain.

But it's all part and parcel of non-league football, most clubs will have similar circumstances over the season. And to their credit Melford competed well throughout, staying in the contest until the final few minutes.

Match report from Chenoberet:

Confronted by runaway leaders Felixstowe, injury hit Melford faced a daunting afternoon, but what a fantastic battle they made of it.

Only two minutes into the game and the leaders went ahead, indecision in the Melford defence allowed MILES POWELL time and space to fire the ball home.

For some 15 minutes thereafter it turned into almost a siege of the Melford goal with an effort from Jordan Matthews coming closest when his shot shaved the Melford crossbar.

After weathering the onslaught Melford started to find their rhythm and a long range shot from David Lopez saw Felixstowe keeper Danny Crump almost caught out saving at the second attempt.

The Melford equaliser came after 23 minutes with some quality play, when Hassan Ally made space down the Melford left flank and his cross found CALLUM HEMSON who swivelled to fire into the net.

This gave impetus to Melford and they for a period started to look the better team.

On 29 minutes they had an excellent chance to go ahead, some good inter passing between Ally and Ben Judge saw the final pass find Hemson three yards out with the goal at his mercy but the youngster screwed his effort wide of the post.

Again Felixstowe started the second half at a high tempo, but Melford defended in a resolute manner.

A Stuart Boardley free kick was headed wide by Dan Davis from an excellent position, which was about the best chance created.

At the other end Melford were still much in the game and pressed hard, and a shot from Andy Fisher cleared the crossbar.

Shortly after this Melford assistant manager/goalkeeper Josh Shepherd donning the gloves after a five year absence made the save of the match, a header from Rhys Barber looked goal bound, but was prevented by an acrobatic save by Sheppard.

On 64 minutes Felixstowe went ahead when their top scorer MILES POWELL fired home from thirty yards, a goal of excellence.

Still Melford fought on and nearly clawed back a goal when Sam Bayliss got through on goal but his effort was blocked by keeper Crump.

The final goal came after 87 minutes when Powell turned provider for SCOTT CHAPLIN to net from eight yards.

MELFORD: Josh Shepherd, Dan Smith, Josh Collins, Jake Jackson, Ross Waugh, Anthony Waugh, Hassan Ally (45), Ben Judge, Andy Fisher (83), David Lopez, Callum Hemson

Subs: Sam Bayliss (45), Steve Chisholm (83)

Subs not used: Dan Swain, Jamie Bradbury

  • Today's reserve team result was Woodbridge Town Res 2 Long Melford Res 1 (George Day the scorer for Melford).
