Match Report v Framlingham (a)

FRAMLINGHAM TOWN 2 - 3 LONG MELFORD

THURLOW NUNN PREMIER DIVISION - SAT 13 OCTOBER

After a tough week conceding 14 goals in two matches, Melford bounced back to win at Framlingham Town who were unbeaten in their previous five home matches.

After fielding an experimental side in midweek, it was a more experienced line-up today with Steve Adams, Anthony Waugh, Sam Bayliss, Hassan Ally and Will Wingfield all returning.

The match didn't begin well for Melford, finding themselves a goal down inside the first minute when Framlingham forward DANNY SMITH volleyed home from close-range.

Melford then began to get a foothold in the game and dominated much of the first period.

They drew level inside 15 minutes when Hassan Ally skipped past his marker on the right to pull back to captain Steve Adams. With his back to goal and a crowded area, he rolled the ball into the path of NATHAN ROWE, who prodded into the net.

With eight minutes of the first half remaining, and Melford on the attack, a corner sent in by Dan Swain bounced up awkwardly inside the six yard area, hitting the raised arm of a Framlingham defender.

The referee had no choice but to award a penalty and Spanish midfielder DAVID LOPEZ stepped forward, holding his nerve to tuck the ball away and put the visitors in the driving seat.

In the second half Framlingham got back into the game with their number 9, Smith, making things tick for them dropping deeper to get on the ball and help create.

However, they didn’t make the most of their possession in the early stages and Melford then found more rhythm, which led to them extending their lead.

Again Ally was involved down the right, cutting inside and playing a pass into Rowe on the corner of the Framlingham box. Rowe then fed into the path of SAM BAYLISS, overlapping into the area, and the full-back showed composure to slide the ball past the keeper and make it 3-1.

With the two-goal advantage, Melford dropped deeper to protect their lead and it allowed Framlingham an opportunity to get back into the game when a cross from the left with ten minutes on the clock landed at MATT ALDIS in room at the far post. His deft lob from 15 yards dropped neatly inside the upright to set up a nervy finish.

Both sides could have netted in the final stages, and both were appealing for penalties that never came, but in the end Melford held on through five minutes of added time to take home three much-needed points and move up to 11th in the table.
