Match Report v Godmanchester (h) 2018/19

LONG MELFORD 3 - 3 GODMANCHESTER ROV.

THURLOW NUNN PREMIER - SAT 30 MARCH - Att: 78

This was an entertaining contest between two sides giving it everything in search of points for different reasons, with Melford battling for survival and Godmanchester pushing for promotion. Match report from Chenoberet...

The strong visiting team started off by containing Melford to their own half, an early shot from Jack Chandler rattled the Melford bar and the rebound was tucked into the side netting.

However there was no mistake on six minutes when BUSTER HARRADINE fired in a fierce drive from thirty yards.

There was an immediate response from Melford when a Kieran Michaels cross found Steve Adams who headed against the Goddy crossbar.

Spurred on Melford started to play attractive football and levelled on 17 minutes when from a Kieran Michaels' corner a bullet header from ROSS WAUGH found the net.

Twice Melford spurned chances when Hassan Ally beat his man and put in fine crosses with no Melford player able to apply the finishing touch.

It was no surprise on 29 minutes when Melford went ahead, Deklyn Roy fed the ball to Steve Adams three yards from the visitors goal, the Melford skipper was taken out by a challenge from behind and a penalty awarded with NATHAN ROWE converting the kick in a competent manner from the spot. For some curious reason no yellow card issued? Due to injury from the challenge Adams had to leave the field a few minutes later to be replaced by Sam Bayliss.

Another Melford set piece saw Ross Waugh power a header onto the top of the goal net.

Four minutes into the second half and Melford went further ahead this time DEKLYN ROY powered in a header from another Michaels corner.

With increased energy and their substitutes making a difference Godmanchester fought hard to get back into the game and after 69 minutes the second goal arrived, a cross from Chandler found AUSTIN DIAPER who netted from close range.

Play switched from end to end with Hassan Ally blazing over the bar for Melford, and on 90 minutes Alex Brown hit the Melford crossbar only for the ball to drop into the arms of Michael Bett, the seventeen year old Melford keeper.

The watch ticked slowly for Melford into injury time with Godmanchester players swarming forward to level the scores in the last few minutes, AUSTIN DIAPER netted his second.

Godmanchester drop one place to 3rd, while Melford climb out of the relegation zone but only by one point.

LONG MELFORD: Michael Bett, Scott Sloots, Will Wingfield, Dek Roy (71), Ross Waugh, Anthony Waugh, Hassan Ally (84), Jacob Brown, Steve Adams (32 injured), Nathan Rowe, Kieran Michaels

Subs: Sam Bayliss (32), David Lopez (71), Ben Judge (84)

not used: Dan Smith, Josh Collins
