Match Report v Godmanchester (h)

LONG MELFORD 1 - 2 GODMANCHESTER ROVERS

Thurlow Nunn Premier - Saturday 31 March - Att: 57

PICTURED: David Lopez scored from the penalty spot to get Melford back in today's match - but in the end 3rd-placed Godmanchester proved too strong and extended their winning run. Match report from Chenoberet...

High flying Godmanchester always had that little extra fuel in their tank, and took a comfortable victory at Stoneylands, although to their credit Melford never gave up the game until the final whistle.

Credit to Melford groundsman Ivan Whitehart who despite the weather had the Stoneylands turf looking immaculate.

Early on the visitors almost took a quick lead when a snap long range shot from the experienced Ross Munro was only narrowly wide of the Melford goal.

At the other end Melford forced the first corner of the game, but the effort from David Lopez was hacked clear by the visiting defence.

After James Scammell in the Melford goal saved well from the busy Matt Allan, Godmanchester took the lead after 32 minutes, a wide ball found AUSTEN DIAPER unmarked down the Melford right flank and his angled shot found the Melford net.

On 42 minutes Godmanchester doubled their account, with Melford defenders back peddling a cross was whipped in from the Melford left flank and Godmanchester skipper MICHAEL HYEM ran into to side foot the ball into the net.

Two minutes before the interval and Melford could have got a goal back as central defender Aaran Mackay struggled to complete a turn, he was robbed by Will Wingfield who ran through on goal but advancing keeper Phil Peachey dived at his feet to block his close range shot.

The second period was much better for Melford and they changed their format and put more pressure on the visiting defence.

But it was Godmanchester who created further chances, home keeper Scammell saving well from the livewire Jack Chandler, with the rebound coming to Matt Allan and his shot rocked the Melford crossbar.

On 60 minutes Melford gained their just reward, Hassan Ally was brought down in the box, and DAVID LOPEZ slotted home from the penalty spot.

Still chances arrived at both ends, Diaper cracking a shot against the Melford bar, and Ally for Melford through on goal slipping over two yards out when about to launch a shot.

On the final whistle Melford cleared off the line another good effort from Munro the visiting midfielder.
