Match Report v Godmanchester Rovers (home)

LONG MELFORD 3 - 2 GODMANCHESTER ROV.

THURLOW NUNN PREMIER - SATURDAY 14 DECEMBER

A sometimes frenetic and closely fought contest between two evenly matched teams was ultimately decided by Jamie Griffiths' free kick of great quality.

It was fitting that Jamie scored the winner as he received an award before kick-off (photo by Kevin Cook) for reaching 100 matches for the club. The trophy was presented by Jamie's grandparents Fred and Sylvie two loyal supporters of the club over many years.

After 8 minutes Goddy almost went ahead when Melford keeper Matt Walker was marooned off his line, but central defender Ross Waugh saved the day for Melford when he cleared the loose ball just before St Ives Town loanee, Tom Wakley was about to blast into the empty net.

After 16 minutes Melford went close Nathan Rowe played in Griffiths, but his neat chip shot shaved the bar rather than finding the net.

On 26 minutes a gaffe in the Melford defence allowed Goddy to take the lead, a short back pass to keeper Walker was snapped up by TOM WAKLEY to put the visitors in the driving seat.

Not for long however, straight from the restart Melford were level. skipper STEVE ADAMS in his 250th match strode through the Goddy defence and unleashed a powerful drive which curled inside the post and into the net. Just rewards for The Villagers who had competed well up to that point.

On 39 minutes the visitors again took the lead a whipped in corner evaded keeper Walker and was bundled in to the Melford net by ROSS MUNRO, in real terms two gift goals to the visitors.

To their credit Melford showed good spirit and fight, when they levelled straight from the second half restart.

This time BEN JUDGE showed immense skill to twist and turn in the Goddy box, and then to finally swivel and fire home, a good quality goal.

And so chances arrived a both ends Williams heading narrowly wide for Godmanchester, whilst Jacob Brown worked his way into the visitors box only to be denied by keeper Niall Conroy with a fine save.

On 82 minutes Melford put the game to bed. After Judge on a driving run was fouled on the edge of the Goddy box, JAMIE GRIFFITHS stepped up for the kick, with a left footed free kick curled the ball into the corner of the net. A fine effort that would have graced any game at any higher level.

Just time for the industrious Jacob Brown to run from the half way for Melford, beating several defenders only to see his final effort blocked in the Goddy goalmouth. CHENOBERET
