Match Report v Gorleston (h) 2018/19

LONG MELFORD 2 - 2 GORLESTON

THURLOW NUNN PREMIER - SATURDAY 04 AUGUST - ATT: 78

Pictured: Will Wingfield received an award for making 150 senior appearances for the club before kick off. Unfortunately Will was involved in a nasty clash of heads in the second half and was taken to hospital - as soon as we've heard how Will is getting on we'll update everyone on the website.

The match itself was one of mixed emotions for Melford, there was disappointment not to win after taking the lead twice - but overall a positive start to the season with both new signings Glen Morrison and Pablo Chaves having impressive debuts.

After 11 minutes the man from Granada, Pablo Chaves skipped through the Gorleston defence, and with keeper George Parkin to beat, his shot went over the bar.

The Norfolk team gave an immediate response at the other end, when their best player Joel Watts left the Melford defence in his wake, and his fierce shot struck the Melford cross bar and rebounded back into play.

The lead came for Melford after 18 minutes when Will Wingfield was upended in the box, and that man from Tenerife DAVID LOPEZ converted from the spot.

Six minutes later and Melford almost increased their lead, Wingfield forced his way down the Melford left flank, his shot evaded everyone and ran along the goal line and into touch on the right flank.

The Greens then forced play into the Melford half and penalty box, and in a goalmouth scramble, Nelson Carinhas pushed the ball goalwards, the ball got under keeper Glen Morrison, but somehow the keeper retrieved it before it crossed the goal line.

On 29 minutes Melford lost skipper Steve Adams through sickness to be replaced by Jake Jackson.

Another great chance came for Melford on 36 minutes a long kick from keeper Morrison put Wingfield through on goal but his low shot was blocked by keeper Parkin.

On the half time whistle Melford again came close to scoring when a snapshot from Chaves caught keeper Parkin unawares, and the ball shaved the upright.

Incredibly in the opening five minutes of the second half Melford had three excellent penalty area chances with Wingfield, Ally and Chaves unable to find the net.

Likewise on 51 minutes Gorleston were presented with a golden chance Watts went though into the Melford box but fired wide.

At this stage of the game Gorleston were getting the better of exchanges and on 54 minutes they drew level, Melford allowed Watts too much space and his excellent cross found RYAN FULLER who fired home.

Another good Melford throw in put in Hassan Ally on the Gorleston goal but his shot was saved by keeper Parkin.

After a nasty collision of heads play was held up for ten minutes, with Melford's Will Wingfield going to hospital with concussion, and Gorleston full back Jack Tipple leaving the game to have stitches to a cut over his eye.

It was now Gorleston in the driving seat with Gilfedder and Fuller both firing wide of the Melford goal.

On 83 minutes Melford were ahead, a Lopez corner found Aaron Pengelly and his forceful header hit the cross bar, and after two goal line clearances central defender ANTHONY WAUGH found the net.

Melford then came very close to putting the match to bed when Chaves' clever back heel played in Rowe through on goal, who beat the keeper but saw his shot hit the post.

The home team were then left disappointed on 87 minutes when Gorleston levelled, a disputed throw in favour of Gorleston found the Melford box and ROSS GILFEDDER rose high to head home.

Melford will look back on some missed opportunities in this match but overall a good performance.  CHENOBERET
