Match Report v Great Yarmouth (h) 2018/19

LONG MELFORD 3 - 0 GREAT YARMOUTH TOWN

THURLOW NUNN PREMIER DIVSION - SAT 20 OCTOBER

This was a closer match than the scoreline suggests, it was in the balance for 70 minutes before Melford finished strongly to end up comfortable winners.

On a fine autumn day played on a pitch in excellent condition, the first half was largely uneventful apart from a couple of chances at both ends.

Yarmouth although bottom of the table had an impressive FA Vase win against Wroxham last Saturday and made a confident start today.

Melford defender Sam Bayliss had to clear off the line after 7 minutes and Aaron Sanders nearly connected with a cross at the far post after 22 minutes.

Yarmouth shaded the first half, while Melford also had a few promising moments with Hassan Ally forcing Yarmouth keeper Kingsley Barnes in to a good save and Will Wingfield shot wide after a strong run.

Overall though the first half was disjointed and the match didn't really come to life until the second half.

It then became very open and end to end, with both sides pushing hard for the opening goal.

Melford keeper Glen Morrison made a great double save, while at the other end Barnes also made a point blank stop from Wingfield's shot. A few minutes later Pablo Chaves went close to connecting at the far post.

The longer it remained goalless, the more important the opening goal would be in this match.

It was Melford who made the breakthrough after 68 minutes, WILL WINGFIELD got the goal his all round performance deserved when his chip was just out of the reach of Yarmouth keeper Barnes.

Ten minutes later Hassan Ally burst into the box and was brought down. NATHAN ROWE put away the penalty in clinical fashion to double Melford's lead and put the match to bed.

Melford kept up the pressure and it was nearly 3-0 when Pablo Chaves' excellent free-kick was well saved by Barnes.

The third goal did arrive in injury time, a good header by Josh Collins released HASSAN ALLY and he coolly slotted the ball past the Yarmouth keeper. AC
