Match Report v Hadleigh Utd (h)

LONG MELFORD 6 - 1 HADLEIGH UNITED

THURLOW NUNN PREMIER DIVISION - SATURDAY 02 NOVEMBER

The miserable weather did not deter The Villagers, who with this emphatic victory recorded their sixth league win on the trot.

Despite the conditions both teams tried to play constructive football, with Melford showing the better finishing prowess.

For most of the opening minutes Melford looked impressive, with the combination featuring the experience of Jamie Griffiths and skills of young Tom Blackwell (on his home debut) being an outstanding feature of the game.

Melford went ahead after 15 minutes, a pinpoint free kick from Ashley Sloots found Blackwell on the Melford right flank and his neat pass found the feet of JAMIE GRIFFITHS who slammed the ball home from twenty yards via a deflection on route.

The visitors were not without chances, a Gavin Van Oene corner was cleared off the Melford goal line, and the offside flag saved Melford on 34 minutes, when Joel Glover played in Van Oene behind the Melford backline.

On 43 minutes Melford came close when a fine shot from Dan Smith just cleared the Hadleigh crossbar.

Again on the half time whistle Hadleigh had a good chance when an angled drive from Kyron Andrews was narrowly wide.

Although Hadleigh started the second half at a high tempo, gradually Melford started to get a grip of the game.

On 55 minutes the tricky Blackwell took the ball round Hadleigh keeper Nick Punter, who then brought Blackwell down, with WILL WINGFIELD stepping up to convert the resultant penalty.

Melford increased the lead on 62 minutes when a Griffiths free kick found the Hadleigh far post and ROSS WAUGH slid the ball home.

After 68 minutes there was a glimmer of hope for Hadleigh, when a corner confused the Melford defence and GAVIN VAN OENE stabbed the ball home from two yards.

On 72 minutes Melford scored their fourth goal when JAMIE GRIFFITHS took the ball off keeper Punter and rolled the ball into the net.

Four minutes later and Jacob Brown found the Hadleigh net, for the effort to be disallowed for offside.

It was now Melford on a scoring spree with DAN SMITH netting on 86 minutes, and in added time JAMIE GRIFFITHS scoring the sixth to complete his hat trick.

Incredibly in the last two minutes Blackwell twice got in on goal, but was unable to get the goal his hard work deserved.

For Melford still missing 6 regulars through injury, this again was a wonderful result for The Villagers. CHENOBERET
