Match Report v Hadleigh Utd (League Cup)

LONG MELFORD 4 - 2 HADLEIGH UNITED

LEAGUE CUP 1st ROUND - WED 25 SEPTEMBER

Steve Adams, Ross Waugh, Dan Swain and Jacob Brown scored the goals as the League Cup holders began their defence of the trophy.

In the second round Melford have a home draw against Whitton United (tie to be played Wednesday 23 October).

Overall this result gave a true reflection of the game.  For large portions of the game Melford were well in control, with Hadleigh upping their game after pulling a goal back after 60 minutes.

The game was held up for a period of time after only four minutes had gone, when Hadleigh wingman Kieran Turner fell to the ground with what appeared to be a knee injury and as a result was stretchered off to take no further part in the game.

Playing a lot of one touch football and moving the ball quickly Melford took control of the game and deservedly went ahead after 23 minutes, a great cross into the box saw STEVE ADAMS get on the end of cross and his powerful header found the net.

For a short period Hadleigh came back to force Melford on the defensive with Sam Sharp and Kyron Andrews, giving Melford problems.

On 44 minutes Melford cemented their lead when a Dan Swain free kick from just inside the Hadleigh half saw ROSS WAUGH head home at the far post.

Still Melford impressed into the second period with DAN SWAIN on 49 minutes finding the net from 30 yards defeating the despairing dive of Nick Punter in the Hadleigh goal.

Just as Melford seemed to be cruising to a convincing win the old habit cropped up, a Melford defensive muddle arose between keeper Ben Devlin and the Melford back line, and in nipped KYRON ANDREWS to fire into the Melford unguarded net.

This sparked Hadleigh into a short burst of energy, a Hadleigh shot hitting the Melford crossbar and another effort being cleared off the Melford goal line.

Any Hadleigh hopes were completely vanquished on 73 minutes when JACOB BROWN volleyed home from thirty yards, his strike hitting the underside of the bar, and then into the net. A goal of great quality which should reign as the goal of the season for Melford.

Over a short space of time Melford introduced their two young speed merchants, Callum Henson and Kyle Hurley, who playing wide on the flanks created havoc with Hadleigh defence, with chances plenty but no further goals for Melford.

Instead at the other end on 88 minutes JAMES ROSS fired in from a wide position to garner some faint hope for Hadleigh. Despite flinging players forward they were unable to reduce the deficit. CHENOBERET
