Match Report v Haverhill Rovers (h) 2018/19

LONG MELFORD 1 - 0 HAVERHILL ROVERS

THURLOW NUNN PREMIER - MON 22 APRIL - Att: 122

The club was really pleased to have Blake Leonard as our Mascot at today's match. 10-year-old Blake is a carer for his disabled Mum. He had told club director John Nunn his dream is to be a Football Mascot, so John arranged it for today.

Blake is an inspirational young man and we hope he enjoyed his afternoon as Mascot. Blake definitely brought us a change of luck as we won a home league game for the first time since October!

This was billed as the match of the season for Melford, as nothing short of three points would enable them to continue their fight against relegation.

And fight they did, with Haverhill in strict defensive mode, relying only on sporadic breaks. Melford had lots of possession and pressure but it is goals that win matches and despite the strong monopoly of play the relief was clearly visible on supporters and players, alike when Ashley Skeggs headed home from a corner in the last minute of normal time and then the ground erupted like a mini volcano.

The chance of staying up still exists with Yarmouth only managing a draw at Gorleston and Ely winning at Godmanchester.

After 11 minutes Melford found the net via a Will Wingfield drive deflected off skipper Steve Adams into the net, the goal ruled out as Adams was in an offside position.

Then a thundering effort from Deklyn Roy, saw Haverhill keeper George Bugg save at the second attempt.

This was followed by Kieran Michaels, Supporters Player of the Season, making an excellent run and his shot again caused Bugg to make a diving save.

After 28 minutes Haverhill made two quick breaks, with striker Graeme Turner heading wide from a good position then minutes later wide man Sam Bennett got down the Melford right flank and his cross shot flashed wide of the Melford goal.

On 31 minutes Haverhill again threatened, but Ashley Skeggs cleared off the Melford goal line.

On 49 minutes Melford should have gone ahead for a golden chance fell to Nathan Rowe who got into the Haverhill box but could not find the target.

In a frenetic ten minute period after 60 minutes Melford hit the bar and post but could not find the net.

Then on 80 minutes Ross Waugh was upended in the Haverhill penalty area, but the referee was not convinced of the penalty claims.

And so play briefly went to the other end where Melford again cleared off the line a Haverhill effort.

With the clock ticking fast it looked as though Melford were destined again for a result thwarted by the lack of a goal.

And then on 90 minutes the magic moment arrived, a corner from Kieran Michaels and there was ASHLEY SKEGGS to head home.

It was like a pressure valve exploding for Melford, all round the ground scenes of jubilation, for players and supporters alike. And not a person could deny a thoroughly deserved victory and some hope of saving relegation, now all down to the final game. CHENOBERET
