Match Report v Histon (a) 2018/19

HISTON 2 - 1 LONG MELFORD

THURLOW NUNN PREMIER - TUE 07 AUGUST - ATT: 162

It was another frustrating result for Melford, who were in front for the majority of the game and never seemed in trouble until they were undone by two goals in four minutes late on.

The Villagers opened brightly with a David Lopez free kick finding Ross Waugh five yards from goal, but his shot went wide of the goal.

At the other end Histon responded with Danny Gould firing his shot over the Melford bar.

After some good play between Lopez and Pablo Chaves, after 15 minutes, the final cross from the Melford left flank found SAM BAYLISS free on the right hand side of the goal and he cut in to finish in clinical fashion.

This clearly rattled the home fans who in the first game of the season had seen their team demolish Haverhill by four clear goals.

Still it was Melford who continued to look the more likely to score. On 33 minutes another chance arrived a long kick from keeper Glen Morrison found Pablo Chaves in space, who ran some thirty yards through the Histon defence, but he shot wide of the far post.

Just before half time Histon forced two corners on the trot but there was no end product for the home team.

The Villagers opened the second half with confidence and Hassan Ally outpaced his markers, but his cross that ran along the penalty area found no one to convert.

Soon after this Lopez fired two efforts over the Histon cross bar.

Still Histon could find little in the way of fluency despite having a fair share of possession.

On 63 minutes Melford had another good chance, Sam Bayliss got behind the home defence from a right wing position but his shot was saved by Sam Roach in the home goal.

Things then seemed to start to gel for the home team midway through the half, upon the introduction of the experienced Lee Smith from the bench who started to control the midfield area of the game.

Play was held up for some minutes for treatment to Pablo Chaves who was on the end of a unfair challenge from Simon Swinton, who perhaps was lucky to be in receipt of only a yellow card for his offence.

Gradually Histon were now starting to have an impact on the game and on 75 minutes Joe Sutton found his way down the Melford left flank, his cross was headed into the net by a Melford defender for an own goal.

Within four minutes the now buoyant home team found the winner, an excellent snap shot from thirty yards from SIMON SWINTON finding the corner of the Melford net.

The Villagers fought hard to level the score line, and were a little unlucky in the dying minutes when a Hassan Ally header was hacked off the goal line and soon after a 25 yard free kick from Scott Sloots was inches over the cross bar.

When Melford start to convert more chances they will go far! CHENOBERET
