Match Report v Histon (h) 2018/19

LONG MELFORD 2 - 1 HISTON

THURLOW NUNN PREMIER - SAT 15 SEPTEMBER - ATT: 76

Pictured: Man of the match Pablo Chaves scored two high-quality goals today.

The whole team gave the perfect reaction to Wednesday's FA Cup exit by ending high-flying Histon's 100% win record in the league.

Melford were missing 8 players due to injury and holidays - obviously not ideal, but as always in football when this happens it gives a chance for other players to come in and impress.

Josh Collins, Jake Jackson and Will Wingfield were all excellent on their return to the starting line-up, while Aaron Pengelly has waited patiently for his chance and had an outstanding full debut today. Archie Pether, Andy Fisher and Ryan McNicholas also played their part when they came off the bench. Match report from Chenoberet:

This was a top class performance by Melford against a previously unbeaten Histon team, particularly in view of the fact that through a number of injuries and other reasons Melford were minus eight players from their normal squad.

A brace of goals from the man from Granada, Pablo Chaves was enough to give Melford a deserved victory.

It was hectic in the early minutes for Melford against their strong and experienced opposition. In attacks by Histon Rob Ruddy headed over the Melford bar, and Melford defender Anthony Waugh cleared off the Melford goal line in another penalty area scramble.

There was a quick response from the pace of Hassan Ally saw his shot flash just wide whilst on the other flank Aaron Pengelly shot inches wide.

On 14 minutes Melford went ahead, the pace of PABLO CHAVES took him down the Melford right flank, and his shot on the angle deceived keeper Sam Roach, a goal of quality for the Spaniard.

As expected Histon came back and the Melford defence was at times at full stretch. The equaliser came after 33 minutes, after Melford failed to clear from their penalty area, a poke from Ed Rolph, rebounded off Melford defender Jake Jackson into the net for an own goal.

Just before the interval Dan Brown headed over the Melford bar and Evan Key put his shot inches wide.

There was no change in the second half with Melford using their revised format to great effect and posing problems all the time for the Histon defence.

The winner came for Melford on 82 minutes, the ball found PABLO CHAVES in space and he selected his spot and from 35 yards his perfect shot found the top corner of the net. One of the best goals seen at Stoneylands for a few seasons.

MELFORD: Glen Morrison, Jake Jackson, Dan Swain, Elliot Walker (63), Josh Collins (84), Anthony Waugh, Hassan Ally, David Lopez, Will Wingfield (85), Pablo Chaves, Aaron Pengelly

Subs: Andy Fisher (63), Archie Pether (84), Ryan McNicholas (85) not used: Jamie Bradbury, Sam Mansfield (gk)
