Match Report v Ipswich Wanderers (a)

Match Report

Ipswich Wanderers 0 - 1 Long Melford

Thurlow Nunn Premier - Tue 24 October - Att: 81

Pictured: Will Wingfield's last minute winner made it back-to-back away wins for Melford this week,  following Saturday's 4-1 victory at Wivenhoe Town.

It was a scrappy match at times against an Ipswich Wanderers side recently reinforced under new manager Mark Benterman, which presented a closer game than the earlier in the season victory for Melford at Stoneylands.

After only 4 minutes a shot from Ashley Sloots, on the night the best player on the pitch, was cleared off the Ipswich goal line.

This was followed by a free kick from Nathan Rowe which sailed over the Ipswich bar, and then another chance when Steve Adams was played into the box by Hassan Ally only to see his shot comfortably saved by Jack Spurling in the home goal.

At the other end Ipswich spurned two good chances, new signing Paris Tuwizana had two efforts blocked by the Melford defence, then Peter Maina took advantage of a split Melford defence but his effort went well off target.

The Villagers continued to enjoy more possession, with Rowe again finding space over the bar with another free kick, and in another attack Dan Swain put in a great shot only to see it cleared off the Ipswich goal line.

The best chance of the half fell to the home team, a ball found the unmarked Tuwizana on the Ipswich right flank, the wide man ran in on goal and with just keeper Darren Moyes to beat blazed the ball over the bar.

With Melford kicking down the slope for the second half, play to a large extent replicated that of the first half, with any flow to the game punctuated by niggly fouls and a fussy referee who produced a number of yellow cards.

The winner almost came for the home team on 76 minutes when a well struck free kick from Ipswich full back Paolo Coelho, looked destined for the Melford net only for Darren Moyes in the Melford goal to dive full length and push the ball round the post.

Despite Melford having plenty of control another great chance came for Ipswich ten minutes later, a cross found the Melford box, a defender slipped over and the ball came to the feet of young Sam Cheetham some three yards out, but in his haste to convert he scuffed his shot with just Moyes to beat.

As the game crept into the third minute of added time Melford scored the all important goal.

A free kick from TJ Le Page from the left flank found substitute WILL WINGFIELD and his downward header bounced into the net, evading the keeper and two defenders on the goal line. CHENOBERET
