Match Report v Little Oakley (h)

A hard fought win in the Buildbase FA Vase today and Melford needed some good goalkeeping by Ben Devlin and a slice of luck to get the win.

With a long list of regulars unavailable and 8 changes to last week's squad, Melford knew this would be a difficult game but to their credit the players who came into the side all played their part in the victory.

Match report from Chenoberet:

Amongst the absentees for Melford was talisman striker Jamie Griffiths, ineligible to play in the Vase because he is a loan player.

Within the opening five minutes Melford could have been two goals behind.

Inside the first minute a defensive error allowed in the outstanding Luke Mayhew, the best Oakley player, through on goal from a wide position but Melford keeper Ben Devlin was quick off his line to narrow the angle and make the block.

Soon after this, another good chance was created by the visitors but Harry Mann shot wide.

With the sluggish start behind them Melford scored the only goal after 16 minutes.

A great surging run by Dan Swain on his return from holiday, saw the ball via keeper Dan Joyce come wide to NATHAN ROWE and his delicate chip found the net.

Three times soon after this Melford created opportunities, two crosses from Hassan Ally and one from Kyle Hurley crossed the Oakley area without a Melford player able to convert.

On the half time whistle Oakley had a gilt edged chance to level, Melford allowed a ball from their right hand flank to find the Melford far post, and somehow Mayhew with a gaping goal of him headed over the bar.

For a large part of the second half Oakley had the Melford defence working hard, Mann saw his header pushed wide by keeper Ben Devlin, then Lewis Wood headed against the Melford cross bar.

Melford were forced even more on the back foot when they were reduced to ten men when Callum Hemson was banished to the ten minute Sin Bin.

This gave impetus to Oakley and again, sub Harry Miller had a great chance but blazed wide from four yards.

Just before the end Melford threatened with sub Will Howe shooting wide from seven yards, and then Melford at the death looking for a penalty when sub Max Boulter was brought down in the area.

So for Oakley a harsh result based on the overall game, but for a depleted Melford a good victory against the odds.

MELFORD: Ben Devlin, Dan Smith Will Wingfield, Jake Jackson (83), Ashley Sloots, Anthony Waugh, Hassan Ally, Dan Swain,  Callum Hemson, Nathan Rowe (injured 50), Kyle Hurley, (87)

Subs used: Josh Norris (83), Max Boulter (87), Will Howe (50) not used: Darren Moyes, Jamie Bradbury  Att: 51

  • Melford receive £550 prize money and will be away to Coggeshall United in the next round (tie to be played Saturday 14 September).
