Match Report v Newmarket (a) 2019/20

NEWMARKET TOWN 4 - 1 LONG MELFORD

THURLOW NUNN PREMIER - TUE 06 AUGUST 2019

PICTURED: Nathan Rowe scored a late consolation goal but it was a similar story to the Woodbridge match on Saturday, with Melford competing for long periods of the match but ending up on the receiving end of a heavy defeat.

It's very early days in the new season and Woodbridge and Newmarket are both strong opponents, but from the Melford point of view we all know the team hasn't performed to its potential so far.

The talent is there in the squad with a combined total of over 250 goals for the club, so it's a question of finding the right formula on the pitch. Having said that, Melford have had no luck in front of goal, missing a penalty on Saturday and hitting the woodwork twice last night.

Before kick off tonight there was a nice touch by Newmarket Town, congratulating Melford (over the PA system) on winning the League Cup last season.

The opening 25 minutes were even with both keepers called into action.

Melford's new signing Ben Devlin, who had an impressive debut, made a good save from Lewis Whitehead. While at the other end, Nathan Rowe broke free of the Newmarket defence but his shot was blocked by Alex Archer.

The Jockeys went ahead after 26 minutes a free kick from Michael Shinn was bundled home by JAMES SEYMOUR.

Just on half time BEN ROBINSON ran twenty five yards without serious challenge to make it two. A good run and finish but not the best defending either.

Early in the second half Melford came close to getting back in the game on three occasions, Dan Swain firing over the bar from close range and then both Rowe and Swain hit the post in quick succession.

With Ross Waugh in the Sin Bin after 67 minutes, Melford were on the end of a debatable penalty after 75 minutes which JACK WATSON converted.

On 85 minutes MARK LOVELL headed home to make it four for the home team.

Two minutes before the end NATHAN ROWE fired home a consolation goal for Melford.

LONG MELFORD: Ben Devlin, Dan Smith, Ashley Sloots, Deklyn Roy, Ross Waugh, Anthony Waugh, Dan Swain, Archie Pether,  Jamie Griffiths, Jacob Brown, Nathan Rowe

Subs used: Hassan Ally, Kyle Hurley, Sam Newton  not used: Jake Jackson
