Match Report v Newmarket Town (a) 2018/19

NEWMARKET TOWN 0 - 1 LONG MELFORD

An impressive all round team performance was rewarded by a much-needed three points today, ending an 11-match run without a league win.

After playing well in patches recently, Melford put it all together today for a complete 90 minute performance with all 13 players playing their part in the win.

On an excellent 3G playing surface, without the dubious "black bits" or exaggerated bounce that artificial pitches sometimes have, both sides had early opportunities.

The home side went close after 6 minutes when Michael Shinn's free-kick was deflected narrowly past the post. In another attack Shaun Avis shot wide.

Newmarket had most of the possession throughout the half but Melford were always a threat on the break, with Pablo Chaves, Archie Pether and Emmanuel Machaya all getting in shots from dangerous positions.

After 20 minutes Melford keeper Sam Mansfield made a good save from Blake Kicks, soon after this Anthony Waugh denied Newmarket what looked a certain goal with a last second interception in the box.

Both sides then had further opportunities but it remained 0-0 at half-time.

Into the second half and Melford took the lead after 57 minutes. A nicely flighted corner by Kieran Michaels was met with a thumping header by STEVE ADAMS giving Alex Archer in the Newmarket goal no chance.

Newmarket then piled forward looking for the equaliser, but through a combination of outstanding defending and some off target finishing, Melford keeper Mansfield only had to make a couple of routine saves.

At the other end of the pitch, Melford had several excellent chances to score a second goal and give themselves some breathing space.

Pether's well struck shot was saved point black by Archer, Machaya hit the bar and Hassan Ally and Pablo Chaves both got through on goal and had shots deflected wide for a corner.

There were a few nervous moments late on as the home side piled on the pressure, but overall a convincing win for Melford who are the first side to keep a clean sheet at Newmarket in the league this season. AC
