Match Report v Newmarket Town (h) 2018/19

LONG MELFORD 0 - 2 NEWMARKET TOWN

THURLOW NUNN PREMIER - SAT 02 MARCH - Att: 78

Melford will be disappointed to lose this match in the last 10 minutes, the overall performance deserved better but the Villagers will have to keep their heads up and move on to the remaining 8 matches of the season. Match report from Chenoberet:

For Melford it was almost the same script as the midweek defeat to Whitton, some good football played and no shortage of chances created, but crucially no goals.

Several chances were not converted by Melford in the first period, the best opportunities falling to Pablo Chaves and Emmanuel Machaya.

At the other end the Melford defence performed well with Anthony Waugh heading off the line from Max Melanson and goalkeeper Michael Bett doing well with efforts from Ben Robertson and Lewis Whitehead.

Just before half time Melford's man of the match Kieran Michaels ran down the Melford right flank and his measured cross found Chaves who couldn't convert.

Opening the second half Bett in the Melford goal made a fine save from Sam Gomarsall diving full length to push to push round the post.

Missing or not converting was again the feature in the second half for Melford with at least five good chances going begging.

In one attack Melford had three bites of the cherry, firstly Chaves through on goal had his shot saved by Alex Archer the Newmarket keeper. The ball rebounded out to Machaya who also had his shot blocked. Finally the ball came back out to Steve Adams who again had his powerful shot blocked.

At this point even the most optimistic Melford supporter probably sensed it was not going to be their day.

And so it proved. Conceding an 81st minute penalty was a sucker punch, JACK WATSON scoring from the spot and with Melford pushing men forward for a leveller they were caught on 84 minutes when LEWIS WHITEHEAD got forward quickly to fire home from the angle.

LONG MELFORD: Michael Bett, Kieran Michaels, Will Wingfield, David Lopez (77), Ross Waugh, Anthony Waugh, Hassan Ally, Jacob Brown, Steve Adams, Pablo Chaves, Emmanuel Machaya

Subs used: Deklyn Roy, Dan Smith, Josh Collins,

Subs not used: Max Boulter, Archie Pether
