Match Report v Newmarket Town (h)

LONG MELFORD 0 - 2 NEWMARKET TOWN

Thurlow Nunn Premier - Saturday 28 December

The Jockeys were just a little too smart for The Villagers, with their quick break football using their lively wingers to full potential, Ben Robinson and Jack Chandler, as the speedy outlets excelling with quick crosses into the box.

The first Newmarket goal coming after 8 minutes was a prime example of the successful Newmarket tactic. A ball was fed to Ben Robinson on the Newmarket right flank his speed took him beyond the Melford back line and his measured cross saw his fellow speed merchant JACK CHANDLER cut into the Melford box from the left to knock home the unchallenged cross, a goal of good quality.

On 30 minutes Jack Watson almost doubled the lead when he swivelled to fire home his shot fizzing just past the Melford goal post.

At the other end and after 34 minutes Melford almost retrieved the situation when a header from Anthony Waugh was cleared off the Newmarket goal line, and minutes later another header by the same player was pushed over the bar by keeper Alex Archer.

At the 40 minute mark Newmarket increased their lead, after a scramble in the Melford goal mouth following a long throw, ROSS PATERSON bundled the ball into the net via a Melford defender.

Melford started the second half with great intent, with Ben Judge heading narrowly wide, whilst Jacob Brown was 12 inches wide with a fierce volley from the edge of the box.

At the other end Newmarket forced two corners on the trot and failed to convert a free kick from a useful position.

In the space of a short time two fearsome tackles from each of the teams were yellow carded when on another day they could have been instant dismissals.

Despite all the Melford huffing and puffing it was not to be their day and Newmarket deservedly took all three points.
