Match Report v Norwich United (H)

LONG MELFORD  3  NORWICH UNITED  4

(Thurlow Nunn Premier, Sat 5th Sep 2020)

The highly fancied Norfolk team took an early two goal lead, with Melford looking a little lacklustre after their epic FA Cup victory on Tuesday, and it looked as though a heavy defeat was on the cards. However this ended up being a close match that could have gone either way.

Early in the game a blistering shot from Jamie Griffiths was saved at the second attempt by keeper Andy Wilton in the Norwich goal.

From that point the Norfolk team, who are very quick in attack and robust in defence started to control the game.

A penalty after 14 minutes for a foul in the box saw MATTHEW DANIELS convert and give Norwich the lead.

It could have been two goals after 23 minutes when with the offside flag down Jack Hurrell, got behind the Melford defence but home keeper Matt Walker made a fine point blank save.

On 25 minutes from a corner with the Melford defence static, defender SAM WATTS prodded home from close range to put Norwich two goals to the good.

With Melford struggling to find any momentum, the towering Norwich defence easily repelled any attacking skirmishes.

On 38 minutes Melford got a goal back when Ben Tait was pushed over in the box, and NATHAN ROWE converted from the penalty spot.

The second half was an entirely different affair with Melford going up a gear in their play and now it was time for Norwich to defend in numbers.

On 52 minutes Melford levelled when a poor back pass was not cleared properly by keeper Wilton and JACOB BROWN found the net for Melford.

This seemed to be the inspiration for Melford and they started to control the game and on 57 minutes Melford went ahead, a sweeping pass found CALLUM HEMSON down the Melford right and the winger cut in to fire past the advancing Wilton to put Melford in the driving seat.

Soon after Melford almost increased their lead when an angled drive from Brown was pushed round the post by the diving Wilton in the Norwich goal.

Norwich were not finished however, a long ball from midfield evaded the Melford defence and the excellent NATHAN STEWART nipped in after 65 minutes and ran through to slot past Walker the Melford custodian.

It was heartbreak for Melford on 78 minutes when a Melford defender dallied on the ball and was robbed, eventually the ball was crossed into the box and defender ANDREW EASTAUGH, got into the box to poke the ball into Melford net.

Despite some last minute efforts Melford were unable despite some valiant efforts to rescue any of the points. CHENOBERET
