Match Report v Redbridge (a) FA Cup

REDBRIDGE 1 - 3 LONG MELFORD

THE EMIRATES FA CUP - SAT 11 AUG - ATT: 52

It's always a privilege to play in the world's most famous cup competition and of course the FA prize money is very important for clubs at this level - Redbridge receive £750 for today's match and Melford pocket £2,250.

Melford opened with some neat and attractive football and it was not a surprise when after 7 minutes they took the lead.

A David Lopez corner found Ross Waugh and he hit the bar, from the rebound the ball was calmly tucked in by HASSAN ALLY.

After the early Melford control, Redbridge worked their way into the game with Asher Modeste and robust striker Calvin Poku starting to cause some problems. But the Melford defence were in fine form and dealt with the pressure very well.

A 35 yard shot from Joey May, spotting Glen Morrison off his line, looked to be heading into the net but the Melford keeper recovered well to make the save.

Then a shot from Modeste cleared the Melford bar, followed by a Joey May free kick which Melford central defender Waugh headed over the bar.

The second goal arrived for Melford after 41 minutes, some good work by Lopez saw his pass find Nathan Rowe, who then found Ally in a wide position, and his cross to the far post was headed home by Melford skipper STEVE ADAMS giving Lewis Greene the home keeper no chance.

Straight from the second half restart Redbridge laid pressure on the Melford goal with both Poku and May firing in fierce shots which missed the target.

On 48 minutes Melford went three goals to the good. Redbridge trying to play out from the back, gave the ball away to Hassan Ally, who ran with speed into the penalty area, only to be upended by a defender.

DAVID LOPEZ converted from the penalty spot to give Melford a three goal cushion.

Redbridge players were pushed forward to try and reduce the deficit. On 51 minutes the goal arrived, a corner from May was not cleared by the Melford defence and eventually DJ ADELEKAN converted from close range.

This created even more intent for Redbridge and they piled forward. Another goal almost came after 72 minutes for the Motormen, midfielder Liam Burgess charged through the Melford defence but his well struck shot from the edge of the area cleared the Melford bar.

With Redbridge pushing forward, Melford had opportunities on the break but were unable to find the target.

A good battling performance by Melford against a strong home team, overall a deserved result for the Villagers.

MELFORD: Glen Morrison, Jake Jackson (57), Josh Collins, Elliot Walker, Ross Waugh, Steve Adams, Hassan Ally, David Lopez (86), Scott Sloots, Pablo Chaves (75), Nathan Rowe

  • In the next round (Preliminary Round) Melford are at home to St Margaretsbury or Enfield, tie to be played at Stoneylands on Saturday 25 August. Prize money for that match is £2,890 for the winners, losers receive £960.
