Match Report v Southend Manor (a)

SOUTHEND MANOR 0 - 0 LONG MELFORD

THE EMIRATES FA CUP EXTRA PRELIM, SAT 10 AUGUST 2019

Southend Manor were unchanged from their impressive midweek win at Hashtag United, while Melford made three changes with Ben Judge, Will Wingfield and Hassan Ally replacing the injured Ashley Sloots and unavailable Archie Pether and Dan Swain.

With a gusting wind between 50 to 60 mph diagonally over the pitch, this was never going to be a classic match.

Both keepers made important saves, in particular Melford's Ben Devlin (from Croydon City Arrows in Melbourne, Australia) who performed some wonder saves for Melford.

With Southend having the better of the wind first half, it was Melford who looked the better team in the early stages. However some early efforts from Alfie Walker who came close with a free kick, and the tricky Callum Fitzer who saw his two efforts saved by keeper Devlin.

Melford started to get their game together but with Jamie Griffiths and Ben Judge not finding the target in Melford attacks.

Although Melford enjoyed plenty of the ball, again it was Southend who threatened when Mehki Hyde fired in from the angle only to see keeper Devlin push the ball over the bar from point blank range.

The second half saw Southend kicking into the gusting wind, but they looked a much better team than in the first period and in an early attack again Devlin pushed round the post an effort from Hyde.

On 63 minutes a catalogue of Melford defensive errors allowed in Jordan Chambers and he had three good chances to put Southend ahead, the best of which was an open goal but his tame shot was hacked off the Melford goal line by Anthony Waugh the Melford defender.

After 80 minutes and with Melford pushing for the winner, Nathan Rowe was inches over the Southend cross bar with keeper Adams beaten.

Then in the final five minutes of the game Kyle Hurley saw his effort saved by Adams from close range, and in the final minute and in another goalmouth melee Griffiths saw two efforts cleared off the Southend goal line.

So a draw it ended, with the replay at Stoneylands in Long Melford at 7.45pm on Wednesday 14th August.

LONG MELFORD: Ben Devlin, Dan Smith, Ben Judge (60 injured), Deklyn Roy, Anthony Waugh, Ross Waugh, Hassan Ally (83), Jacob Brown, Jamie Griffiths, Nathan Rowe, Will Wingfield (69)

Subs: Jake Jackson (83), Kyle Hurley (69), Sam Newton (60) not used: Ashley Sloots
