Match Report v St Margaretsbury

LONG MELFORD 3 - 1 ST MARGARETSBURY

THE EMIRATES FA CUP PRELIM - SAT 25 AUG - ATT: 107

  • Action photo with thanks to Stewart Ambrose - more photos are on Facebook [click here]

Both sides had won their previous two matches heading into today's FA Cup tie. Melford almost had a full squad available apart from Dan Smith (injured) and David Lopez (holiday).

For winning today's match Melford receive £2,890 in FA prize money, on top of the £2,250 for beating Redbridge in the previous round. Match report from Chenoberet...

With the largest crowd of the season behind them, Melford dug deep to record a well earned victory, against Essex Senior League opposition.

St Margaretsbury were dangerous going forward but the Melford defence solid like Fort Knox dealt with the threats, and behind them keeper Glenn Morrison made two crucial and talented saves when the scoreline was 0-0.

The opening ten minutes saw the Hertfordshire team on the offensive, and Melford found the pace and trickery of ex-Wycombe Wanderers trainee Ramone Cassidy-Sinclair a handful to deal with.

After 4 minutes Connor Scully got through into the Melford box but some brave keeping by Morrison, saw his effort blocked by the Melford custodian.

In a Melford attack converted striker Steve Adams flashed his header wide of the visitors goal.

On 24 minutes Melford keeper Morrison again kept the scoreline intact, a corner from Dan Ferrigno found Taylor Wild and his first time volley on the swivel was magnificently pushed over the bar.

After a slow start Melford gradually started to knit together, and on 32 minutes they went ahead after a spell of pressure.

A Nathan Rowe free kick wide on the left flank and a deft touch from ANTHONY WAUGH at the far post put Melford ahead.

This inspired Melford to greater things and on 36 minutes they went further ahead, a Dan Swain corner found Steve Adams and his bullet like header back across goal found HASSAN ALLY who converted from close range.

The visitors responded with Phil Lowen firing over the bar and the same player in another attack put his header past the post.

The Villagers started the second half with great determination with Man of the Match, Ben Judge being involved in most moves.

One on one chances fell to Melford and four good opportunities were not converted.

On 56 minutes the visitors almost got back in the game when a piledriver from Tom Cowell was deflected for a corner by the strong Melford back line.

The game swung in favour of St Margaretsbury for ten minutes through the mid period of the half, with them forcing three corners on the trot but Melford reigned supreme with their great defensive qualities.

On 82 minutes Melford put the game to bed when a short back pass was intercepted by captain STEVE ADAMS and he slotted home to score in his 200th match for the club.

In the five added minutes St Margaretsbury's TOM COWELL fired into the top corner from fifteen yards for a well-taken consolation goal.

Overall a good performance from Melford, and deserved progress to the next round.

MELFORD: Glen Morrison, Sam Bayliss, Dan Swain, Elliot Walker, Ross Waugh, Anthony Waugh, Hassan Ally (78), Ben Judge, Steve Adams, Scott Sloots (62), Nathan Rowe (75)

Subs: Ashley Sloots (62), Pablo Chaves (78), Will Wingfield (75) not used: Jake Jackson, Aaron Pengelly, Josh Collins

  • The draw for the 1st Qualifying Round is expected to be in the next few days. The next round will be on Saturday 8th September, which means the league match scheduled for that day away to Walsham has been postponed.
  • We hope the Long Melford Colts enjoyed their day as mascots yesterday, walking out on to the pitch with the team.
