Match Report v Stanway Rovers (h) 2019/20

LONG MELFORD 1 - 9 STANWAY ROVERS

Thurlow Nunn Premier Division - Wed 21 August - Att: 96

After two consecutive victories, Melford were dismantled by a rampant and motivated Stanway Rovers, falling to their heaviest home defeat of the 21st century.

At times Melford were unrecognisable from the team that beat Southend and Ely, whilst Stanway turned on the style that will surely see them as early promotion candidates.

The Essex team went ahead early in the game a long throw from Tyler Kemp found the Melford box, and the Melford clearance went straight to JAMIE SHAW who drove the ball home from the edge of the box.

Twice the much travelled Andy Wood came close for Stanway whilst Melford struggled to get into the game.

On 32 minutes ANDREW WOOD put Stanway two goals to the good, placing the ball past keeper Ben Devlin.

It looked after 42 minutes Melford had a way back into the game, when Stanway central defender, Jon Carver upended Will Wingfield in the penalty box, and NATHAN ROWE converted from the spot.

Having been yellow carded in the game earlier perhaps Carver was fortunate to remain an active player?

Just as everyone went for their half time cup of tea Stanway restored their two goal lead, Jordan Blackwell was allowed space to whip in a cross from the Stanway right flank, the ball deceived the whole Melford defence and ANDREW WOOD had the simple task to head from one yard out into the net.

The second half for Melford is better to be the subject of a memory delete button for Melford, as they were totally outplayed in every position.

After 54 minutes JORDAN BLACKWELL fired home from distance. On 56 minutes JAMIE SHAW finished from close range.

It became six goals on 61 minutes when MARLEY ANDREWS volleyed home. A minute later sub TOM HOLDSTOCK fired home for the 7th goal.

There was a short break in action until 81 minutes when that man again  ANDREW WOOD was allowed time and space to head home.

In the dying minutes TYLER KEMP found the net with a drive from 25 yards.

Hopefully for Melford this will have the reverse impact upon the players and they will catapult back into greater momentum and level for their FA Cup tie against Colney Heath FC at Stoneylands this coming Saturday.
