Match Report v Stowmarket (h) 2018/19

LONG MELFORD 1 - 1 STOWMARKET TOWN

THURLOW NUNN PREMIER - SAT 17 NOVEMBER - ATT: 148

After a 5-0 defeat at Stowmarket two months ago this was a much closer contest.

After leading for the majority of the game Melford will be a little disappointed not to hold on for the win - but overall it's a good point against a Stowmarket side with a lot of higher league experience.

Melford had 11 players injured or unavailable but with good strength in depth at the club, manager Jamie Bradbury was still able to name a strong side. Match report from Chenoberet:

Another fantastic performance by Melford, this time against League high fliers Stowmarket Town.

From the opening whistle Stow were on the offensive and a sharp shot from Scott Chaplin brought out a good save from Glen Morrison in the Melford goal.

Minutes later and Morrison came out to save at the feet of Remy Garrett when through on goal.

Throughout, the game was entertaining and played at a keen pace.

After 27 minutes Melford took the lead. Full back Josh Collins ran strongly at the Stow defence, his excellent pass to the left flank found PABLO CHAVES who cut in at the angle, and his precisely placed shot found the corner of the net. Another excellent goal from the Spanish youngster.

On 33 minutes Stow had the chance to level when from a corner the ball came out to Ryan Clarke, but his shot was wide of goal from ten yards.

Both David Lopez and Chaves were again close for Melford who were edging their illustrious opposition all over the pitch.

The second half saw a desperate for points Stowmarket increase their tempo of play pushing up field full backs Ollie Brown and Robbie Sweeney, with Sweeney being particularly effective down the Stow left flank.

This pressure saw top scorer Josh Mayhew fire wide from a great position, but other attacks were thwarted by a solid Melford back defensive line with central defenders Ross and Anthony Waugh outstanding.

In a quick break Melford put in Chaves who again went close and then from a Lopez corner the same player had his snap shot cleared off the line by keeper Robinson.

In another attack on 52 minutes Melford saw a Chaves shot hacked off the goal line by Tom Matthews the Stow midfielder.

Again the Melford defence came under huge pressure with most of the play coming from Sweeney down the Stow left flank, but the Melford defence stood firm as a rock.

It was getting desperate now for Stow and around the 80 minute mark the equaliser arrived in a scrappy ping pong session in the Melford box, with keeper Morrison on the ground SCOTT CHAPLIN prodded home from two yards. Not pretty but important for Stowmarket.

It was Melford who almost snatched the winner in the last minute of added time when that man Chaves fired in a shot from the Melford left flank and keeper Robinson dived full length to make a save at the second attempt.

MELFORD: Glen Morrison, Callum Hemson , Josh Collins, Jake Jackson, Ross Waugh, Anthony Waugh, Sam Bayliss, David Lopez (71), Will Wingfield, Nathan Rowe, Pablo Chaves

Subs used: Steve Adams (71)  not used: Max Maughn, Kieran Michaels, Steve Chisholm, Jamie Bradbury
