Match Report v Stowmarket Town (h) 2018/19

STOWMARKET TOWN 5 - 0 LONG MELFORD

SAT 22 SEPTEMBER - THURLOW NUNN PREMIER - ATT: 192

What a difference a week makes. Melford after their high octane performance last Saturday against Histon, didn't look the same team today and were well below their best.

The home side are top of the league and have a squad of players who were previously at a higher level - but nevertheless Melford are capable of producing much better than today's performance.

Two soft goals in 16 minutes virtually gifted Stowmarket their 2-0 lead and from thereon, it almost became a damage limitation exercise.

Completely out of the blue and on 7 minutes JOSH MAYHEW crashed the ball into the net from 25 yards after Melford had conceded possession.

After 16 minutes from a Stowmarket cross a header struck Melford defender Anthony Waugh to register an own goal.

It was all Stowmarket for most of the half and chance after chance were not converted and thus the interval arrived with just the two goal advantage.

Things didn't improve in the second period for Melford, with similar mistakes being replicated from the first half.

The home team pounced upon misdirected passes and over-complicated passes from a defensive position, and Stowmarket added three further goals.

On 70 minutes OLLIE CANFER latched onto a rebound to score from three yards, ten minutes later and OLLIE CANFER intercepted a Melford square pass in the penalty area to fire home.

On 85 minutes the unmarked LUKE READ headed home a cross at the far post.

A comprehensive win for Stowmarket who were simply better in every department. Melford meanwhile having set the benchmark in last week's win against Histon, can hopefully get back to that level again on Wednesday night (at home to Brantham Athletic).

MELFORD: Glen Morrison, Jake Jackson, Sam Newton, Elliot Walker,(72), Steve Adams, Anthony Waugh, Hassan Ally, David Lopez, Will Wingfield, Pablo Chaves (72), Aaron Pengelly (54)

Subs: Callum Hemson (72), Andy Fisher (72), Nathan Rowe (54) not used: Jamie Bradbury, Sam Mansfield.
