Match Report v Swaffham Town (h) 2019/20

LONG MELFORD 3 - 0 SWAFFHAM TOWN

THURLOW NUNN PREMIER DIVISION - SAT 07 SEPTEMBER

PICTURED: Jamie Griffiths scored twice today to take his overall total for the club to 60 goals.

Three was the magic number for Melford today; three points, three goals and clean sheet number three this season. Match report from Chenoberet:

Signs were visible on Tuesday at Whitton when Melford were very unlucky to leave Ipswich without a point.

Early in the game Melford showed their true intentions, when central defender Anthony Waugh flashed his header towards goal and Swaffham keeper pushed the ball on to the post and away to safety.

At the other end a wayward Melford pass, fell at the feet of Swaffham leading scorer Joe Jackson but under pressure Jackson could only find the Melford side netting.

In a ten minute spell of attack by Melford Hassan Ally had his shot cleared off the Swaffham goal line, whilst a blockbuster shot from Jamie Griffiths saw his effort blocked for the expense of a corner.

The Norfolk team responded with Thomas Wagg heading over the Melford crossbar and Ben Coe shooting from ten yards but Melford keeper Ben Devlin made a comfortable save.

Melford continued to press with Jacob Brown heading straight at keeper Tommy Rix, and just on the half time whistle the goal arrived for Melford.

From a Dan Swain corner the ball arrived to JACOB BROWN on the edge of the area, who connected with top of the bounce and driving the ball into the ground his connection flew into the Swaffham net, giving Melford a richly deserved lead.

Into the second half and Sam Carter blazed his shot over the bar for Swaffham.

On 58 minutes there was a controversial decision Will Wingfield for Melford was through on the Swaffham goal, keeper Rix raced off his line, upending Wingfield who had an empty goal in front of him, the referee deemed the foul to be only a yellow card offence., and Melford were unable to capitalise on the resultant free kick.

On 76 minutes Melford increased their lead, Ashley Sloots played a great ball behind the Swaffham back line for JAMIE GRIFFITHS to run onto and the Melford foward netted with precision.

Two further good chances fell to Melford, Wingfield trying to place the ball from close range but finding the arms of Rix, and Griffiths finding his shot blocked by the Swaffham defence.

In added time Melford consolidated their score line when sub Dan Smith played in JAMIE GRIFFITHS to fire home from five yards.

Overall a positive and impressive display from Melford, while for Swaffham they certainly miss the excellent Alex Vincent who is still recovering from injury.

LONG MELFORD: Ben Devlin, Jake Jackson, Ashley Sloots, Dan Swain, Ross Waugh, Anthony Waugh, Hassan Ally, Jacob Brown, Will Wingfield, Jamie Griffiths, Kyle Hurley (65)

Sub: Dan Smith (65) not used: Jamie Bradbury, Darren Moyes, Steve Chisholm    Att: 52

  • It was not such a good day for the Reserves, a tough 9-0 defeat at Diss Town. With most of Melford's experienced players unavailable, it was basically a youth team that travelled to Diss, which is a big ask as the standard of opposition is undoubtedly higher than the Reserves faced last season in the Border League. It was 3-0 at half-time before Diss scored six more after the break. Hopefully a closer game when the two sides play again in the reverse fixture at Stoneylands on Saturday.
