Needing a point to be certain of staying up, Melford finished the league season in style with a third consecutive win to ensure supporters didn't have to anxiously check their phones for news from Godmanchester v Yarmouth.

Staying up is a weight off the shoulders and now everyone at the club can look forward to the League Challenge Cup Final.

It's fair to say Thetford had an eye on their big night coming up at Carrow Road on Tuesday, this was reflected in their team selection with six changes to the side that beat Walsham on Easter Monday. Match report from Chenoberet...

By sheer tenacity and brilliant teamwork Melford completed a three game winning sequence to finish in fourth from bottom of the League and in doing so retained their valued Premier status.

Although Thetford had a much-changed line up, Melford excelled all over the pitch and fully deserved their vital win.

With a strong gusting diagonal wind, both teams found it difficult to settle.

But Melford went into the lead after 12 minutes Deklyn Roy chipped a ball over the defence into the path of STEVE ADAMS and his left foot effort deceived keeper Paul Snowdon and the home custodian could only help the ball into the net.

Melford continued to attack and a Hassan Ally cross found Kieran Michaels but his header cleared the crossbar.

Gradually with the wind to their advantage Thetford came into the game Telmo Rocha putting his shot narrowly wide.

Again Melford had a good chance when home keeper Snowdon managed to handle the ball twice in his area and Melford were awarded an indirect free kick in the Thetford penalty area, the kick taken by Michaels was blocked by the home defence.

The best effort of the half for Thetford came when Querin Castro fired in a 35 yard wind assisted shot only to see Michael Bett the Melford keeper make a fine save.

With Melford seemingly in control the equaliser arrived on 59 minutes, some sloppy defending allowed HARRY HUTT in to poke the ball home from close range.

Another great chance came for Melford after 62 minutes when a free kick from Will Wingfield found an unmarked Adams, in the Thetford box who then failed to connect with the ball properly and the ball went wide of the goal.

The wind played a part in the Melford second goalm a long punt from the Melford defence confused the Thetford back line, keeper Snowdon hesitated and HASSAN ALLY nipped into to lob the keeper with a quality finish.

After 68 minutes Melford had a narrow escape when Castro got behind the Melford defence, what looked a certain goal was prevented by Bett's stunning save.

But is was Melford who had the final say, when after Ally had shot against the post, Pablo Chaves was brought off the bench and with his first touch a fine free kick swung into the Thetford box and there was defender ROSS WAUGH to head firmly into net.

Despite bringing on their ace striker, the league's top scorer Volta Rocha, Thetford could not recover ground and Melford ran out impressive and worthy winners.

A great shift from all the Melford team, with Jacob Brown man of the match for his work rate and sheer determination.
