Match Report v Thetford Town (h)

LONG MELFORD 1 - 3 THETFORD TOWN

THURLOW NUNN PREMIER - SATURDAY 16 NOVEMBER

This was Long Melford's first defeat in 9 league matches and although the score line was a little flattering, it was a deserved victory for the Norfolk team who recorded their fifth consecutive win.

Within the space of fifteen minutes crosses from Jamie Griffiths and Tom Blackwell whizzed across Thetford box but no player from either team were able to lay touch to the ball.

The sum total all of the Melford efforts, was a Blackwell shot saved by keeper Jamie Humphrey, and a good downward header from Nathan Rowe which was hacked off the Thetford goal line.

As time wore on Thetford started to get into the game with the tricky duo of Tanner Call and Bradley Sandell creating problems for the Melford defence.

From the Melford perspective the opening goal came as a bit of a gift, on the greasy surface a Melford defender slipped, and the marauding MICHAEL CAMPBELL took full advantage of the opportunity, to rifle home a good finish from the left wing angle, and after 22 minutes of the game visitors went ahead.

Melford responded forcing corners and applying pressure on the Thetford goal with efforts from Will Wingfield and Blackwell being blocked on the goal line.

The second period saw Thetford condense their defensive shape but still showing good penetration with their quick counter attacks.

On 72 minutes again a slip by a Melford defender allowed in Tanner Call, but home keeper Matt Walker produced a magnificent point blank save.

On 73 minutes Thetford went two goals to the good when corner curled into the Melford goal and the excellent ELLIOT SMITH saw his near post header, via a deflection, find the underside of the cross bar and into the Melford net.

Still Melford strived hard to get back into the game and on 77 minutes a goal arrived a Blackwell free kick found JACOB BROWN in the box and his glancing header found the net.

Urged on by their supporters Melford surged forward, but that was their downfall on 89 minutes when pushing forward they left themselves open at the back.

A raking pass found TANNER CALL and he left the Melford defence in his wake to run thorough and score a fine individual goal.

Just time for Brown to fire a thunderbolt against the Thetford crossbar.

Then jubilation for an upbeat Thetford team, whilst Melford's unbeaten run finally comes to an end. They will aim to bounce back when they visit Swaffham Town next Saturday. CHENOBERET
