This was a hard fought draw with plenty of entertainment for the 50 or so spectators who braved the bleak weather.

Colchester United Under 18s defender Kieran Michaels had an impressive debut for Melford, while Deklyn Roy made his first appearance of the season from the bench and played a big part in the equalising goal. Match report from Chenoberet:

Melford fought back well during the second period to secure a deserved draw with their Norfolk visitors, who were two goals up after only 25 minutes.

Throughout the game Valter Rocha, the Thetford striker was a constant danger to the Melford defence and on this performance could be playing at a much higher level.

The opening 6 minutes saw chances at both ends with Will Wingfield firing straight at keeper Will Viner for Melford, whilst Rocha got through on the Melford goal only for home keeper Glen Morrison to come off his line and make a good old fashioned tackle to save the day.

After 18 minutes Melford gave away an early Christmas present, Melford keeper Morrison came to the edge of his area with the ball at his feet only to be robbed by livewire VALTER ROCHA, who after two attempts fired the ball home. An unfortunate goal to concede for The Villagers.

Just six minutes later Thetford went two goals up when the Melford defence went into a back peddling mode and BRADLEY SANDELL was not challenged, and from ten yards he fired the ball home.

On the thirty minute mark two incidents went against Melford, Will Wingfield had the ball in the net and ran away in celebration but a late flag went up to indicate another Melford player was offside, although Melford claimed the ball was over the goal line before the other player became involved. After some debate the goal was not allowed.

On 33 minutes keeper Viner made a hash of a clearance which went straight to Melford striker Will Wingfield, some thirty yards from goal and after passing a lone defender on his way to the goal Wingfield was brought down, by a Thetford defender, surprisingly deemed a yellow card offence by the referee.

At last on 42 minutes Melford got their deserved reward, courtesy of an OWN GOAL. After a melee in the Thetford goal mouth, with the ball bouncing around the goal line area, keeper Viner managed to push the ball into his own net.

Right on half time that man Rocha got through on goal for Thetford only to be ruled offside.

The home team started the second half with urgent intent, and 17 year old debutant Kieran Michaels fizzed the ball past the Thetford goal post with an excellent shot.

On 68 minutes Melford made two substitutions, and within two minutes one of these made a contribution to the Melford equaliser.

A great midfield challenge by Deklyn Roy, saw his subsequent pass put Hassan Ally free down the right flank and his measured cross came to WILL WINGFIELD who side footed home from close range.

It was a frantic end to the game with each team going for the win, twice Melford keeper Morrison saved well from Rocha and then from Dane Coomber-Willis on a run from the back of defence. At the other end Roy was inches wide with a header from a corner.

In the end a fair result and for Melford a much better second period.

LONG MELFORD: Glen Morrison, Kieran Michaels, Josh Collins, Jake Jackson (67), Ross Waugh, Anthony Waugh, Hassan Ally, David Lopez (67), Will Wingfield (89), Nathan Rowe, Pablo Chaves

Subs used: Deklyn Roy (67), Andy Fisher (67), Archie Pether (89)

Subs not used: Cory Willings, Will Howe
