Match Report v Thetford

THETFORD TOWN  0  LONG MELFORD  2

(THURLOW NUNN PREMIER DIVISION, SAT 24 OCTOBER)

After performing well lately but without any points to show for it, Melford got their season up and running with their first league win.

Melford started brightly and in the second minute created a decent chance when Jamie Griffiths fired over the bar after good work by Jose Santa.

This was followed by a Will Wingfield header from a corner that went narrowly over the bar.

In the 12th minute Melford took a deserved lead. Jose Santa picked the ball up on the left wing, outpaced a Thetford defender and his low cross found BEN TAIT who opened the scoring with a composed finish.

Melford created another chance in the 19th minute when Evan Culmer got forward from right back and crossed into the box for Griffiths but his shot was comfortably saved by Thetford keeper Frank Gammon.

Around the half hour mark Gammon made an excellent save from a Kieran Michaels' piledriver.

Towards the end of the half Thetford came more into the match and twice went close to equalising.

Firstly the Melford defence had to clear off the line after Sam Bond found space on Thetford's right and cut the ball back across the box.

The next Thetford chance arrived just before half-time when Bernando Felgueiras latched onto a through ball, rounded the advancing Melford keeper Matt Walker but from a difficult angle fired wide.

In the second half Thetford pushed for the equaliser but with Melford defending well, keeper Walker wasn't called into serious action.

At the other end of the pitch Melford always looked dangerous with Jose Santa and Griffiths linking up well.

Both players were involved in the second goal in the 69th minute, when Jose Santa worked the ball to Griffiths on the Melford left.

A burst of pace from Griffiths took him past the Thetford full back and he fizzed the ball across the box to HASSAN ALLY who fired hard and low into the net.

Melford saw out the remaining 20 minutes of the match to pick up three valuable points. AC
