Match Report v Whitton United (League Cup)

LONG MELFORD 2 - 2 WHITTON UNITED

THURLOW NUNN LEAGUE CUP 2nd ROUND - WED 06 NOVEMBER

The League Cup holders were on the verge of being knocked out of this season's competition until Ross Waugh's last minute equaliser, which took the tie to penalties where the Villagers came through 5-4.

There were three changes to Saturday's line-up with Kyle Hurley, Archie Pether and Anthony Waugh replacing Jake Jackson, Callum Hemson and Ashley Sloots.

Starting the match for Whitton was Pablo Chaves who won this competition with Long Melford last season, scoring important goals in the quarter-final and semi-final. Match report from Chenoberet:

On another night Melford could have wrapped this game up in the opening 20 minutes, with keeper Lewis Higgins making great saves from Jamie Griffiths and Jacob Brown. Another excellent chance fell to Steve Adams who headed over the cross bar.

After 21 minutes Melford went ahead Dan Smith whipped in a fine cross from the Melford right flank and JAMIE GRIFFITHS side footed home.

Shortly after Tom Blackwell had his header cleared off the Whitton goal line.

Ten minutes before the interval Jamie Eaton Collins was off target for Whitton from 15 yards with just the keeper to beat.

Two minutes before half time a Melford back pass was seized upon by LLOYD CLARKE who had the simple task of firing into the Melford net.

The second half belonged to Whitton and they secured what looked to be the winning goal, a shot from Joe Maybanks brought out a good save from Matt Walker in the Melford goal. And from the corner HARRY WALES headed home in the 57th minute.

Despite pressure at both ends the score line remained static until the last minute of the game when from a corner ROSS WAUGH bundled the ball home for The Villagers.

Into penalties both teams missing their opening efforts, Whitton again missed their fifth effort, and up stepped 17 year old HAARIS KHAN, to score and win the tie for Melford.
