Match Report v Whitton Utd (a) 2018/19

WHITTON UNITED 2 - 2 LONG MELFORD

THURLOW NUNN PREMIER - SAT 19 JAN - ATT: 43

With both sides in need of points to keep away from the relegation zone, this was a tight encounter and overall the draw was a fair reflection of the play.

Following two early free kicks Whitton went ahead after 16 minutes. A ball into the Melford defensive area, and the bounce down the slope deceived a Melford defender and striker JAMIE COLE muscled his way onto the ball and fired home from ten yards.

Although finding the slope difficult to defend Melford soon came back into the game after 23 minutes, striker Scott Sloots was fouled in the penalty area, and that man from Granada, PABLO CHAVES slotted home the kick with ease.

On 31 minutes a slightly bizarre incident saw Whitton go ahead.

A Whitton ball towards goal was fisted away by Melford keeper Sam Mansfield, the ball found the head of JOSH HUBERT on the edge of the box, and his slow looping header defeated Mansfield still off his line, and skipper Steve Adams, despite a valiant effort with his head he could not prevent the ball finding the Melford net.

Melford almost levelled on 34 minutes when a rasping drive from Jacob Brown shaved the Whitton goal post. With Liam Wales repeating the exercise for the home side at the other end.

The second half down the slope saw Melford much more on the offensive, with Will Wingfield narrowly wide with a header, while for Whitton Zehnn Young coming very close with a volley.

Melford changed their format and personnel to find the equaliser, and it came after 87 minutes, make shift striker Adams dived to head home from two yards, but missed the goal due to a push in the back and referee Mr Oliver Morris Sanders pointed to the spot.

The Villagers handed responsibility to 17-year-old KIERAN MICHAELS and he coolly slotted home from the spot to earn Melford a point. CHENOBERET
