Match Report v Woodbridge Town (a)

WOODBRIDGE TOWN 1 - 2 LONG MELFORD

THURLOW NUNN PREMIER - SAT 09 NOVEMBER 2019

This was another big test for Long Melford away to 4th-placed Woodbridge Town. The Woodpeckers beat the Villagers 4-0 on the opening day of the season and had scored 20 goals in their previous 5 matches. Match report from Chenoberet;

Again Long Melford put in a fantastic shift and were well worth their seventh consecutive Thurlow Nunn Premier victory.

Melford showed thrust, flair and speed of attack, which constantly put Woodbridge under pressure.

Within the opening minute Nathan Rowe was close for Melford, his shot inches wide of the goal post.

At the other end a Carlos Edwards free kick was sliced over the bar by Melford defender Ashley Sloots.

The tricky Tom Blackwell combined well with Jamie Griffiths and Steve Adams, with Melford unlucky not to find the net early in the game.

Finally the Melford goal came after 16 minutes when ROSS WAUGH was the end recipient of some good Melford movement, he latched on to Jacob Brown's through ball and neatly found the net from eight yards.

A slip by Rowe allowed in Nathan Read down the Melford left flank, his cross came to Jake Rudge but the Melford defence stifled his effort on goal.

After 35 minutes there were a flurry of chances in the Woodbridge goal mouth a Will Wingfield free kick was not cleared, that resulted in a good cross finding Ross Waugh who cleared the crossbar with a strong header.

Melford started the second half in top gear, some nice passing between Blackwell and Griffiths saw the latter fire in a fierce drive that was pushed over the bar by Alfie Stronge the home keeper.

There was a response from the home team but efforts from Kelsey Trotter and Edwards were well wide of the Melford goal.

The Villagers went two goals ahead after 79 minutes Steve Adams was fouled on a wide point outside the box and JAMIE GRIFFITHS drove the ball into the net via a small deflection, a fully deserved addition to the lead for Long Melford.

Straight from the kick off CARLOS EDWARDS found space to fire home after 81 minutes to give Woodbridge a glimmer of hope.

Just before the end Melford defender Dan Smith was sent off after a last ditch tackle.

The final whistle arrived to end another tip top showing by Melford, which moves them to the heady position of third.
