Match Report v Woodbridge Town (a)

WOODBRIDGE TOWN 4 - 0 LONG MELFORD

THURLOW NUNN PREMIER - SAT 8 DECEMBER - ATT: 134

Though the final score may have flattered the home side, the Villagers were beaten by a slick and stylish Woodbridge Town side, who have scored a remarkable 15 goals in their last three matches.

Having triumphed 3-0 at Notcutts Park in the League Cup in October, the visitors were confident they could get something from their latest trip across Suffolk.

But, despite having a couple of openings in the early stages, Melford failed to capitalise and were made to pay on ten minutes when former Ipswich Town ace CARLOS EDWARDS was left to drift alone in space before collecting a pass on the edge of the box and stroking home.

Melford struggled to deal with the sharpness and movement of the home midfield and another intricate passing move set KELSEY TROTTER free into the area and he slid past Morrison coolly.

There were chances for Melford, though, but yet again they were not clinical enough in front of goal. Will Wingfield lifting a shot over the bar when well-placed in the area, and then Nathan Rowe’s free-kick in a dangerous position on the edge of the area couldn’t beat the wall.

It was a much more urgent and lively Melford who came out in the second half and put the home side under more pressure in key areas.

The were left bemused when Rowe was twice hauled down inside the area as the referee waved play on, and a goal at that stage would have set up an interesting final 30 minutes.

Full-back Kieran Michaels and substitutes Andy Fisher and Callum Hemson also had attempts that didn’t trouble the home goalkeeper, before two quick breaks at the other end ultimately did for Melford as MARK RAY added a double to seal a well-earned win.

Melford will once again rue a series of missed chances and switching off at key moments, which was punished by a very good Woodbridge Town side.

LONG MELFORD: Morrison, Michaels, Collins (Hemson), Jackson, D Roy, A Waugh, Ally, Lopez (Pether), Wingfield (Fisher), Rowe, Chaves
